How to Save Money at Animal Dental Care & Oral Surgery

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Everyone was so nice and good to my cat Stanley. They walked me through every step of the process and I trust them completely with all of their recommendations. They were available for any questions I had and always got back to me quickly. Stanley is feeling much better now thanks to everyone here. I adore the little writeup they gave me with his discharge instructions! His photo is on the front and the blurb that they wrote about him was super sweet and very cute💜 Stanley says hello and thank you ☺️ Edit: It’s been 2 weeks since his surgery, and Stanley is doing great! I live an hour away and they very kindly allowed me to get Stanley looked over by my local vet and communicate with them via email with any questions or concerns. Stanley is his usual playful and sweet self again! He is healing well and I will be bringing him back here from now on. He has recurring dental issues, and I feel much better about him seeing a specialist. The staff has gone above and beyond for me and Stanley on multiple occasions and have been very accommodating in many ways. Thank you guys again!

The staff was amazing. I went for my 15 year old dog and we need to do a surgery and they were so kind offering me different options to keep her comfortable. They have free snacks and coffee. The reason it is four stars is the price. $165 for a checkup no shots. But overall it was amazing 👏 🙌 😍

LESSON LEARNED - ASK ABOUT THE RISKS AND SAY NO IF IT IS ABSOLUTELY NOT NECESSARY. I will be sending a letter to the clinic myself. But I will say, ABSOLUTELY ASK ABOUT RISKS. I did not (and I usually do as he had a major surgery at SCVIM next door 12 years ago) and I was not told (I looked at my paperwork for that release you sign and I do not have it) and now my 161/2 year old Vasco has Vestibular Syndrome and spins in circles (now almost 8 months) unless he’s laying down, I am holding him, he is eating, he can at least clean his face sometimes, maybe he’s spun enough distance to his litter box (I’ve now added another one to our space for him). Once a day he may find peace from the spin and sit and look out the window. I will NEVER again make this mistake with any of my animals. While we were provided with care, I am absolutely guilt ridden for not asking as I would have told them DO NOT disturb his root system, just take the 1 tooth that was bad. His vestibular nerve was disturbed in surgery, of which he was under over an hour. So, I will accept some responsibility for not being a good pet parent and asking the right questions, but they DID NOT advise me of any risks except for risks with anesthesia. My Vasco is a super healthy 16 year old and his blood work is always in line and still is - I just had it drawn last week to check before we start e-stim and acupuncture therapy to try and see if we can regenerate his nerve or at leas help in some way. Vasco’s quality of life is dismissed right now and I fear also his lifespan. All my cats have lived well into their 20’s. So, do your heart and pet a favor, get ONLY the care that is absolutely necessary, allow time to heal from that and revisit if more care is needed. The risk is not worth it, trust me.

I've got 4 cats with stomatits, a horribly painful, degenerative disease which can lead to cancer. I also have a cat who needed a fractured jaw repaired. The entire staff, from Madison to Devon to Chelsea to the techs to Drs Adley and Gillory showed the highest levels of compassion and expertise in diagnosing, recommending treatments of the stomatitis kitties and repairing the fracture for my other kiddo. This veterinary dental clinic is one of the best in Colorado.

I have had 3 visits so far to this speciality practice and each time has been a great experience! Dr. Guillory took care of my puppy who needed extraction of some non-vital deciduous teeth a few weeks ago. They got him on the schedule quickly and kept me in the loop on his progress all day. This past week one of my adult dogs fractured several teeth in an accident. Dr. Adley worked quickly to get her in and assess what needed to be done for her. I am extremely grateful for the whole care team for how they took care of her! As a veterinarian myself I am very happy with their specialty service for both my own pets and my clients that I refer. Thank you!
