How to Save Money at Spry Companions: Veterinary Orthopedic Specialists

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I am so happy incredibly impressed with this practice. My dog is a high drive working dog and I always get nervous about bringing her to new vets that don’t understand how to operate around dogs like her. The entire staff was so sweet and LOVED my dog and she loved going to all of her appointments. The vet was exceptionally patient, laid out all my options and was non-judgmental throughout the process. The vets here are SO skilled and the surgery itself went incredibly smooth and I’m very pleased with the results. The way they go out of their way to make sure you have everything you need post-surgery from the laminated post-op instructions to the follow up calls, it was beyond what I expected. The office itself is clean with toys and dog beds, creating a welcoming and inviting environment. I cannot recommend this place enough!!!

My pup Copper was hit by a car and the whole team stayed late on a Friday to get him into surgery that day. Everyone at Spry was compassionate and knowledgeable throughout the entire process. Dr Breshears did an excellent job explaining the surgery and recovery. He called and followed up the weekend following Copper's surgery to make sure he was doing ok. Spry followed up several times post op and were helpful in scheduling follow ups and answering my my questions. I cannot recommend Spry enough. The team is incredible and extremely caring!

Our 14 y/o Pug/Pom mix “Bao” had dislocated her right rear hip and was seen in the ER over a weekend! I am so happy we landed at Spry Companions. We truly can't say enough amazing things about everyone. From the first phone call to get Bao scheduled (they even got all our records from the ER) to our virtual appointment, to the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and final 4th (DOS) in person meetings! Dr. Breshears will tell you what you need to hear, not what you want to hear. He is beyond knowledgeable, caring and understanding, which are all inspiring qualities to have in Veterinary medicine! He took more time than he should have to allow us feel comfortable with the procedure. He went above and beyond for our family. Our discharge nurse Bre is unmatched with her bedside manner! Can we be friends? She loved and cared for our baby like she was her own! We appreciate you so much! The personal details on her PO things filled our hearts with such joy, it’s the little things that go so far 🥰 During such a horrible experience you all made it so much easier to handle. We are on the road to recovery! ❤️‍🩹 Love the Kishell Family ❤️‍🩹

Our cat Coco had two separate hip replacement procedures with Dr. Miller. Coco had spontaneous capital femoral physeal fractures in both hips. There was no impact injury, her hip bones just kind of didn't grow right and were degrading over time. Her condition was very painful for her -- she was walking around on two broken hips -- but I was extremely skeptical of the relatively affordable FHO surgery option. I ended up making Coco wait a year so that I could save up for her to have two full hip replacements and I am glad I did because now she is happier and more mobile than ever. Dr. Miller very obviously stays on top of the literature and current best practices for micro hip replacements, which inspires confidence given how new of a procedure these were. It's clear he cares an incredible amount about pets. I absolutely would recommend this practice.

Dr. Breshears did a TPLO on my mini aussie and I couldn't be more impressed with how well she was treated. This facility is very welcoming and every person we met was kind to both me and my dog. Sydney came out walking the same day and has been doing great the first 5 days out. Highly recommend, I wouldn't hesitate to go back if she needs the other leg done. Thank you all!!
