How to Save Money at Laurel Veterinary Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

From the time I called for an appointment, they were friendly and efficient. I came to Laurel for a second opinion on teeth cleaning and a mass removal. The doc and her tech made sure my pup was comfortable and had a good experience while educating me about what they saw and recommended. They also never made me feel guilty on waiting too long to get my pets teeth cleaned. My only complaint is that I live too far. But I would recommend to anyone in the area becwause of their friendly and trustworthy staff and fair prices! Thank you, Laurel Vet!

Very upset with this vet for a while now. I had a dog back in 2018 ended up having congested heart failure and laurel vet refused to help my dog in this emergency situation. Instead told us to go somewhere else. Skip to May of this year also did not provide support for my 16 year old dog who wasn’t eating or drinking for days and we ended up at urgent care. Later in June, my 17 year old cat’s kidney disease progressed quite quickly and instead of going to Laurel, we just skipped and went straight to urgent care. I find the lack of support and guidance when there are per emergencies is alarming. Last week, I had an elderly family member (that also goes to Laurel vet) bring her cat in because she had not been eating or drinking. And Dr. Gablehouse came out to evaluate her cat in the lobby ( mind you, she had seen this cat many times before and has addressed issue of the cat being overweight) and raised her voice criticizing my family member saying “I told you she was overweight”. My family member is already in distress and feeling bad about her cat and to be yelled at in the LOBBY is completely unacceptable. They did not even put her in a room where there would be more privacy. Then after evaluating the Vet told my family member that her cat would need an ultra sound and would need to go to a hospital in Boulder not urgent care and it would be easily 3,000$. We called the hospital to see about an ultra sound and they informed us that they didn’t have the proper equipment to even perform an ultra sound. This is very aggravating as once again Laurel was unable to provide not only support, but they criticized my family member in the process while also providing misinformation and could have cost my elderly family member a lot of money. PLEASE just be aware of this place. They do not help like they say they do.

Laurel is such an amazing clinic - they’ve treated us and both of our animals so well. Our cat recently had a kidney stone, they squeezed him in quickly and got him feeling better within days!

Laurel veterinary clinic is my hero. My dog was having a really bad seizure and almost died. Kristen Gablehouse and her team saved his life, they treated us great during that emergency visit and took care of my dog. I thank them so much, because of them I still have my buddy Simba. Thanks, Mendoza family.
