How to Save Money at VCA Veterinary Specialists of the Valley

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Awesome! The staff and Dr McNabb are really thoughtful and dedicated to my little Lucy's care! I feel so confident as a pet parent knowing that hospitals like this exist and doctors are ready to help. We don't have children but we have our two dogs and they're just like our babies. Thank you again for everything that you all do even for other pets! I would highly recommend! Thank god for Dr McNabb, she is a wonderful specialist and a great doctor. Lucy is thriving and living ger best life. Her vision is still there in her opalescent eye, it's a little cloudy, but that's nothing compared to what she was going through with the lens that was detached... Luckily Dr McNabb was able to stabilize her condition through medication and careful oversight versus surgery. We and Lucy feel very blessed to have this angel on our side.

I’ve had some time to reflect since my cat passed away last August and it’s really tough for me to admit that I made a huge mistake in trusting the oncology team at VCA. I picked VCA since it was 5 minutes away from my house and I had to take him in regularly for treatments. After reading through some of the other one star reviews, I have to wholeheartedly agree with everything they said. I wouldn’t recommend this place to my worst enemy.

Very Rude! The hardcore chest tattoo-having chick is extremely rude and needs to be fired. She likes to over-talk customers the ACCESS vet up the street is much cheaper and much more personable

Sadly I can't seem to find the name of the vet who refused to do anything but euthanize my poor little dog who was perfectly fine before I saw him licking the floor of my bathroom the previous evening. After trying to diagnose my dog's symptoms and giving them time to correct themselves, without any success and because I saw how much distress he was in, I begrudgingly took him in to this VCA. He wouldn't give him anything to help him or even do a simple test even though I told him he may have ingested something. Instead he said that he had a brain tumor and that our only choice was to put him down (even though he was perfectly healthy the night before) or take him somewhere else to have a brain scan that would cost over $4000! This was the worst experience I've ever had and will forever be fearful of taking my animals to the vet. They are supposed to help save your pet not murder them. These people are either incompetent and have no idea what they are doing or are actually crooks falsely posing as licensed vets but are not. I believe that my precious little dog would still be alive today if I had not gone to this awful place. Do yourself a favor and stay as far away from this place as you can.

Long overdue, but I can’t explain how grateful to have been able to come to VCA Woodland Hills for my dog’s passing. Unfortunately this past January my dog of the past 10 years had to be put down 😔. The staff and vet was so thoughtful and caring of me and my family. They helped us through the hard parts and made it easy on all of us (with the paperwork) while we were mourning our pup. Not only that, but they sent a very thoughtful and personalized card for my whole family and it meant so much to me. ❤️ Thank you VCA for caring about my family and my pup.
