How to Save Money at Alta Mira Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

We have a Veterinarian clinic we can honestly call our new home for all of BiBis care. The clinic is beyond clean, and my husband mention how it has a small hometown feel to it, which is a huge compliment from him. Hands down, this Is the best vetererian clinic/ hospital we ever encountered. I wish I would have known about them when our Belgian Milinois Chance was with us. Dr. Dodd is simply the most pleasant , caring, and knowledgeable Veterinarian we ever known , as well as her staff from Liz being very helpful making appointments, and when we were running late for our first appointment with traffic from Pendleton she was understanding and kind, and Rhonda was complete joy, kept us smiling, and James the tech, amazing energy, and kind , explained and gave great tips for BiBi. Back to Dr. Dodd, BiBi warm up to Dr.Dodd instantly , BiBi was a homesick little pup, we only had a day , she traveled all the way from Missouri and needed a follow up to make sure she arrived healthy, BiBi felt so calm and went straight To Dr. Dodd with tons of kisses. Dr. Dodd is the best Vet my family can ever ask for. We look forward to seeing Alta Mira and all the beautiful people there for BiBi follow up appointment soon. Not to mention the free toy, which BiBi loves.Thank you Alta Mira, you are truly a Blessing ❤️.

This veterinarian practice really cares about the animals. They took such great care of my Teddy when he was alive, I am so grateful for them. Dr. Dodd is absolutely amazing. She’s a sweetheart she has the best bedside manner and really does care about the dogs and cats. The animals I highly recommend them.

What an amazing place! I was so nervous to take my sweet little Foster dog for his check up at a place that was new to us but from the moment I walked in the door it was such a beautiful and peaceful atmosphere. First of all instead of the sterile environment of most chaotic Veterinary places, it was so quiet and peaceful and very tasteful Antiques and vintage photos of dogs and cats. We were taken right in and greeted with such kindness. Never before has my sweet elderly dog been happy to be at a vet. He usually tries to hide under my feet or Escape if possible. But as you can see from the photo here he actually just fell asleep on the table because they were so peaceful and gentle! I could not recommend them enough!

I have only had great experiences at Alta Mira. I’ve been in twice on urgent matters for my dog, Oliver, and they were able to get me in same day. The first visit was swelling in his face due to an abscess tooth (which turned out to be a few teeth), that required a separate surgery day for removal of 10 teeth. He still has 40, and has since increased his appetite and ability to chew. That’s a win for me. The second was today for a heart attack and labored breathing. He’s even gained a few ounces since the teeth removal! He was treated today with heart medication and will be monitored for the next couple days to determine responsiveness. Both times, I was provided options by Dr. Dodd and James, and given info on what to expect in the future. They are empathetic and give context around the approach they’re taking. That’s all I can ask for in a vet team. I feel confident that if something changes, they will work together with me to take next steps. The entire staff is kind and interested in my dog’s well-being. Obviously there is always costs associated with exams and treatments, and I’ve never walked out feeling the cost outweighed the value of care.
