How to Save Money at Horizon Veterinary Specialists
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

My husband and I are beyond grateful for Horizon Veterinary Specialists. We had an emergency with our our 13 year old furry baby Star a week before our wedding! She had a major infection and thank goodness that they were able to rush us in for a check up. If the infection burst and went inside her gut, it could have been a horrible scenario. Thankfully, she got surgery right away, recovered quickly and was able to be with us at our wedding. Amy, Melissa, and the entire team were wonderful at Horizon! Star is well today because of them. Thank you!

They were very kind to us when we were there to put our sweet cat down to rest in 2021.... BUT we have been traumatized and beyond hurt to find out that we did not leave with our sweet girls footprint and ashes like we were promised. We spent alot of money to make sure that we brought her home in a beautiful way. We chose their footprint, and engraved box option with her name on it. Even though the labeled number matching the ashes and footprint are the same the actual footprint is not hers. We have come to realize this YEARS after her passing because I came across her real footprint on my dresser when she had stepped in nail polish when she was still alive. She was our one and only family cat and we are all very taken back by this discovery. Just when we thought we could make more room in our hearts to adopt another cat we are now having to deal with the realization and stress that this has brought upon our whole family years after her passing.

Our 14 year old dog, 6 O’clock had been experiencing some health issues over the last couple of months. He seemed disoriented, confused and was having small seizures. I had planned a visit with his regular vet when the vet returned from a conference, but 6 suffered a grand mal seizure on Wednesday morning. I called his regular vet office and the receptionist recommended Horizon. I called, they said come in. I explained that 6 is my son’s dog and Blaze, 34, suffers from a traumatic brain injury. We knew this was probably going to be an emotional experience and with a TBI even more so. Everyone, from the receptionists desk, to the vet tech, to finally the vet were compassionate and understanding. They discussed options with us, but 6 was clearly in pain and to extend his life would have been cruel. We chose to let him gently pass. They gave us all the time we needed to be with him before. Asia comforted us with when we said it was a hard decision, giving us the example of a shoe that’s too tight. 6 had been living in this too tight shoe for awhile now. It was time to loosen the straps and take the shoe off. They took 6 back to put the catheter in and during that time the front desk gently asked if we’d prefer paying now instead of after. Realizing that after would be an even more emotional time, I took the option to pay while 6 was out of the room. Then we just talked to him for about 15 minutes before the vet came in. She also offered more words to ease our pain. And then 6 gently passed in our arms. The hardest thing - to let a family member, our 6 O’clock go, but Horizon made it as easy as possible. Thank you.

Excellent staff and care when your furry friend is in dire straits. My 8.5 year old Rottie mix ate something he should have and we ended up here. They called in a surgical team after confirming a blockage with an ultrasound. He received emergency surgery late at night to remove a blockage from his GI tract and spent 4 days under their care. I felt helpless as my pup struggled to fight through such an extreme experience but every time I went to visit him, the staff was so compassionate and full of love. I received updates 2x a day and they even sent me pictures. They let me come visit him when I wanted, even the night he needed the surgery. It is not cheap and they do not have payment plans which is restrictive, however, what more meaningful way to spend my money than to save the pup that has kept me whole through so many life changes.

We experienced the hardest day having to bring in our beloved Maltese who passed away at home . Everyone was very compassionate and the signed card we received with all handwritten words of sympathy meant so much to us . A special thank you to Mariyah and Nancy.
