How to Save Money at VCA Animal Hospitals Urgent Care - Tustin

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

This is a great veterinary urgent care! I was worried that my cat had been injured and I called them and got an appointment right away. The staff is super friendly the building is very clean and everything works smoothly and efficiently. The exam fee was not too expensive, very reasonable actually. I highly recommend this urgent care !

I brought my dog Zuzu in for after hours care because she was coughing and had a very positive experience. The staff were all so kind and patient with us and her. They were also very transparent every step of the way and we left with detailed instructions for follow up and a care plan I felt confident in. I absolutely recommend this location to anyone in the area if you are unable to get an appointment at your primary care and your pet is stable enough to not need the ER.

We had a terrible experience here and were completely taken advantage of. Went in with respiratory concerns, which weren’t even treated and charged for unnecessary tests which resulted in traumatic and unnecessary treatment for our dog. Thousands of dollars worth of what I consider fraud. I would never trust this office again.

As a first time pet-parents this facility left us in tears. One star is one too many for this review. We brought our puppy in for a concern that we thought needed professional attention. Our normal vet was out of town, it was the day before thanksgiving, we are first time dog-parents, and it’s 100% safe to say that this corporation took advantage of our vulnerable state. Let’s start with the vet who misdiagnosed us (Dr. Ahn). Not only was there a misdiagnosis (which I understand can happen), but also an aura/attitude about his conclusion which he was unable to communicate to us professionally. "I’ve seen puppies in this situation many times, and if you don’t put him in in-patient care, which can cost around $10K, your dogs survival rate will go down to to 30%, and even less within the next 3 days." After hearing this, and given that we could not afford the inpatient care option, we asked him many times what options we had for home-care, the validity of the test he gave our pup, or other any other possible diagnosis this could have been. He was unresponsive, and unwilling to even hear us out or answer our questions. He denied every question we had, and kept saying that "he had seen it many times before" with no hesitation or remorse in his statements. He basically told us that the moment we took our pup home he would start showing symptoms and die. I don’t know who is managing this facility, but the vets need to be screened, and assessed for their soft skills, and diagnostic expertise. Especially since this is an urgent care. Not to mention that not a single piece of paperwork we came home with that day had any contact information about the vet or what numbers to call. Getting a hold of anyone at this actual facility post-visit was a joke. The representatives who answer the calls all work remotely and have no way of helping or getting you in touch with the workers at this location unless you heighten the issue. There is a way that ALL medical professionals should speak to concerned individuals who are clearly trying to process the information about their loved pup. This is not the place. It’s a scam business basically taking advantage of emotionally vulnerable dog-parents who are simply concerned about their pets health. For the sake of your pet-baby, go literally anywhere else!!

The staff and Dr were the most friendly, caring, and accommodating team! I brought my dog in close to closing, but they still treated us with the utmost care. The facility is beautiful and clean. I highly recommend this vet urgent care.
