How to Save Money at Sunnyvale Veterinary Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I was referred by a client of mine to Sunnyvale Vet Clinic. I have a cat who has upper respiratory issues, and a dog who has allergies. Sunnyvale Vet, specifically Dr. Thaler, has been outstanding from the start. Dr. Thaler is always understanding about my concerns, patient with all my many questions, and empathetic with my budget. I’ve taken my cat to a number of different vets and none of them were as high-quality as Sunnyvale Vet Clinic. My visits are ALWAYS satisfactory and reasonably priced. I highly recommend Dr. Thaler and Sunnyvale Veterinary Clinic!

Cost is very reasonable and the staff are very clear about what the cost will end up being. The staff are all super friendly, from the receptionists to the vet techs to the vets themselves. My puppy loves going to the vet now because the staff are always so sweet to him. I’ve never felt rushed, and they’ve always taken the time to answer all my questions. My puppy even had a vaccine reaction at one point and they got him back into the clinic immediately to treat him for his reaction (which was 100% not their fault). I can tell the staff genuinely care about my puppy’s wellbeing. I love this vet clinic and can’t imagine going to any other clinic!

I USED to love taking my dog to this location. Our most recent vet visit left me quite disappointed. My prior experience has been that they used to treat me and my dog with kindness, respect, and make it a priority to make us both feel at ease. Our visit today was anything but - they were unable to draw my dog’s blood for his annual work and the doctor struggled with simple things like checking his ears and eyes (should have known it was only going to get worse through out the appointment) - mind you we have been coming here for over 2+ years and never had an issue with them treating my dog without causing him anxiety. When I asked for more details, they just said he’s high energy and didn’t bother to provide any more information. When I expressed my disappointment, they just told me to reschedule and pay more to medicate my dog prior to the visit. I deleted my prior review because the quality has definitely degraded. Our previous doctor no longer works here (she never had any issue getting his blood drawn and working with him) and I wonder if the personnel changes drove this change in service.

If you love your pet then I advise you to stay away from the Sunnyvale Vet. My pet had to have a surgery and the Dr did not do her job correctly. Vet Malpractice is at this Vet clinics hands and advise you to find another clinic. Shame on the people that work here and call themselves Professionals that care for animals. The license at this site should be taken away. The only thing they care about is tripling your charges compare to other places that do care and know what they are doing when it comes to your pets care.

Update 2023: My latest rescue dog is *very* vat anxious, as in, she needs to be medicated before visits. They are kind and sweet to her, even when she gets upset as they trim her nails. The staff here is top notch! Huge thank you to all of you from Vader, Valencia, and me! Our favorite vet!
