How to Save Money at Murphy Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Today my 4month old Pomeranian had his wellness exam and vaccines at Murphy Pet Hospital. All the staff was amazing, specially Dr. Hanken! They were so friendly and were so nice with me and my dog! Dr. Hanken answered all my questions and gave some great tips! I’ll totally recommend this place to you and your furry friends!

I love how accommodating this clinic is. There were times when my 8 week old puppy was keep vomiting and having diarrhea but the clinic was able to treat my puppy with fluids and meds on a weekend without an appt. This happened a few times and I was really pleased with their services. If you’re a pet parent you probably know how relieving that is. Everyone working here is also super nice. Highly recommend this clinic!

I brought both my cats here for the first time and it won’t be the last! Dr. Hanken is incredible, so knowledgeable and always thinking of what will be most comfortable for your pet. One of my cats is very aggressive at the vet, and Dr. Hanken handled it better than anywhere we’ve been previously.

This is an updated review in response to the clinic’s comment. TLDR: Very friendly staff. Very high cost. The vet recommended unnecessary things. And the clinic revealed my pet’s medical info here publicly without my consent. ———— Good points about the clinic: The appointments were easy to schedule. The front desk and the technicians were really nice and took good care of my cat. This made visiting the place feel really nice. The doctor was friendly too. Not so good points: The costs were very high (second time ~1200, and third visit ~700), and I later realized that the doctor recommended things my cat didnt actually need. Context: I took my cat for her swollen lip, the vet said the lips didn’t need treatment (the lip did get better on its own and I have no complaint about that). But he noticed that my cat had lost a pound in just a few months, so he suggested we check for her thyroid functions. It seemed very reasonable and it was reassuring that the results came back normal. I was happy to have had it checked. However, he in addition suggested that I do a senior panel saying senior cats (my cat was 8.5 at the time) need the panel every 6 months. This seemed reasonable except that my cat had just gotten it done there three months ago. I told him that we did one a few months ago, but he said it was about time for another one, without telling me that only three months had passed (I didn’t remember exactly how many months at the time), even though he was the one who ordered the initial panel and should have also had it on his chart. I later realized that it was three months after reviewing my cat’s record. I did the senior panel, but my friend who’s a vet said that although checking thyroid function was a good call, the senior panel was unnecessary given only a short time has passed since the previous test. In addition, the vet at Murphy suggested I do a teeth cleaning, even though he said my cat’s teeth looked healthy and had minimal plaque buildup. I had also told him that my cat had done one a year ago. He recommended it anyways and the quoted cost ranged from 800 to a few thousands. My vet friend suggested that I go to a different vet after hearing about my cat’s condition and seeing the invoice of the items, saying that this vet is making me do unnecessary things. —— My response to the clinic’s comment to this review: The front desk did indeed always go over the estimates beforehand, which is the case at every clinic, and that’s not the point of my complaint. I do also understand that recommendations are not requirements. But pet parents usually don’t have the medical knowledge to assess the necessity and benefits of things recommending by the doctor, so we just follow what the doctor recommends to be on the cautious side. We go to the doctor for their expertise, and we usually trust their judgement and don’t assume that they’d recommend things you don’t need. My complaint was not about the clinic forcing me to do things, but that the vet recommended things that weren’t needed (above-mentioned senior panel and teeth cleaning), which I didn’t realize until I reviewed and discussed my cat’s record with my vet friend. Does the thyroid test have a similar price as senior panel? If so, I’d understand that we might as well do a complete senior panel since the thyroid test was already being conducted. But if they are not close in price, then I’d feel that the additional senior panel was unnecessary given that my cat just had it so recently. I did like everything else about the clinic, and would have liked to keep going there. It’s just unfortunate that my last visit went the way it did. I really wish they didn’t reveal my cat’s medical info publicly without asking for my consent. If they thought there were misunderstandings and need to reference specific medical records, I would have preferred for them to email me and I’d be happy to change my review if it was indeed a misunderstanding. But discussing pet info and medical records publicly without owner’s consent felt like a violation of privacy.

The front desk is very nice and accommodating. The vet bill is very transparent, before getting charged, you see the breakdown. The doctor is very knowledgeable and obtains the most thorough history I've seen in a vet. I would definitely recommend
