How to Save Money at Cherry Chase Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

My 2-year old Westie Ava just had her Grade IV luxating patella fixed here and they did a great job :) The staff was so kind and communicative, kept me updated throughout the prep, procedure and recovery, and even put together a little customized care package for her after the surgery. Her incision is very clean and professional. The procedure was also incredibly reasonably priced compared to other options in the area. Anyways, thanks Cherry Chase! Ava is looking forward to running, jumping and playing again soon.

I have a senior dog who comes here for veterinary care. The team has shown nothing but love and compassion towards him. He is a senior dog who had a rough start early in his life and has a lot of trauma behind him. The staff here have been nothing but patient and kind with my grumpy old pup. He had a bad experience at his previous vet a few years ago and it made me worried I could never bring him back to a vet clinic again. He genuinely gets excited to come here knowing he will get all the love and treats. Thank you CCPH for making my dog's visits less scary and showing him that not all vets are bad.

The worst vet clinic experience ever, unprofessional and disrespectful staff !!! As a new client with an Australian Shepherd and a Shiba Inu, I had scheduled appointments for an annual check-up and vaccine rechecks. To my disappointment, the process took a staggering three hours (10:00 am - 1:00 pm) without the completion of my Shiba Inu's heartworm test. My communication with the doctor was brief, spanning no more than 35 minutes, the most of time I was left for waiting. Here are the specifics of my disappointing encounter: Firstly, my Australian Shepherd is an exuberant and easily excited dog which could be easily overwhelmed small dog and jump up on people. Aware of her nature, I attempted to keep her calm by giving her sit commands while other clients with dog were in the lobby. The staff at the front desk misconstrued my efforts to maintain control over my excited Australian Shepherd as unnecessary strictness, claiming that "this is not the place to train your dog." This was both unwarranted and upsetting. Secondly, while communicating with the doctor, I’m very appreciative of her professional patience towards the dogs. However, when I expressed my worries about the potential side-effects of long-term medication for my Shiba Inu's suspected Canine Atopic Dermatitis, the doctor grew impatient and tended to end the consultation. Thirdly, the attempt to draw blood for a heartworm test on my Shiba Inu was unsuccessful despite multiple tries which has caused my shiba to be traumatized. The staff's improficiency was concerning and they simply suggested I buy anti-anxiety medications and schedule for another appointment, which was not only distressing for my pet but also inconvenient for me to take additional time off work. Lastly, the level of communication was deeply dissatisfying. Not only were the medication effects inadequately explained, but I also overheard staff members discussing me in a derogatory manner while I was in the waiting room. It was disrespectful and wholly unprofessional. Having been a pet owner for six years with experience at various vet clinics, I found my experience at this vet clinic to be the most distressing one. I sincerely hope my feedback is taken into consideration for future improvement in the service provided.

Over charge issue and lack of clear communication! First, all I've done is attempt to confine the activity area of my dog preventing my dog from jumping on others and causing them unnecessary problems. I don't consider this as a physical punishment. When you leave a vet clinic, it's not guaranteed everyone will appreciate dogs jumping on them, or likes dogs sniffing around, and when she causes trouble or issue to others it is my responsibility to address them, not yours! So please don’t be so hypocritical and judgemental. Second, the communication between the doctor, the nurse, and myself was very vague. They failed to provide clear explanations regarding the treatments planned for my pets. The clinic also seems to have an issue with overcharging. Despite our conversation in which I informed the veterinarian that my Shiba did not require the Cytopoint injection for the suspected Canine Atopic Dermatitis at this time, I will first try the prescribed shampoo to see if her itchy symptoms are alleviated. They continued the treatment without notification. Suppose my dog is so difficult to handle. Why not conduct medical treatment only after it has been determined that she has Canine Atopic Dermatitis and prioritize the necessary heartworm test in the first place? On top of that, I have clearly informed the doctor and nurse that we had run out of heartworm medication which urgently need to be refilled this month and I will be out of town in the following weeks. Furthermore, they informed me that my dog needed anti-anxiety medication for the next appointment, yet prescribed two medications that serve the same purpose. No one took the time to explain why both medications needed, which apparently have the same function, are necessary to be given simultaneously. I posed the question, no concrete answers were offered. Only says they are anti-anxiety medications.
