How to Save Money at McGrath Veterinary Center

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

i know Mitzi is in good hands when we come to McGrath. we've gotten the pleasure to be helped by Dr. Miller and Dr. Song and they are both wonderful doctors. they spend so much time with me and Mitzi to make sure we are both heard and i understand every little thing that's going on. Mitzi has anxiety so they always make sure to give me a refill of her anxiety medicine before each appointment and are extra gentle with her. the vet techs are very sensitive when it comes to pricing for any procedure, lab, etc and thoroughly review the costs before going forward with anything, which is always greatly appreciated. i look forward to bringing Mitzi to McGrath Vet Center for many years to come!

Took our cat in because he wasn't feeling well. The staff were wonderful. They made sure to get all of the info before the exam. Lots of questions for us to get a picture of his health, history and why we brought him in. The vet did a full exam, talked to us and made some recommendations for things to do. Tests, and such. We got the results of the tests after normal hours by phone and came in the next morning for our cats medicine. A great experience overall. A little expensive, but hey... It's in the middle of Sherman Oaks. They seemed to care about what they do, and it shows. Would recommend.

Warning: This will be a lengthy review, however it is worth reading! I own a 2-year-old intact Rottweiler named King. A little background about King: he is very social, friendly, intelligent, and highly trained. He has always enjoyed meeting new people, getting pets/kisses, and showing his affection towards anyone that will show interest in him (yes, even complete strangers). He is not the typical "Rottweiler" and we raised him this way to break away from the stigma that "Rottweilers are dangerous & aggressive." King had been going to the same vet's office that I will not call out (NOT McGrath Veterinary Center) since he was 10-weeks-old and up until recently, he has always enjoyed going there. Now that King is weighing in at 113 lbs., the vet and vet tech's found it difficult to examine King as he would always wiggle and try to escape from being poked, probed, and placed in uncomfortable situations as I imagine any animal at the vet's office would be. They began to tell us that we needed to give him an excessive amount of Trazadone in addition to them sedating him when he arrives for his appointments. They also stated that he becomes aggressive & dangerous as soon as he is brought to the back. There have been numerous incidents where King has let his veterinarian examine him from head to toe when we are present in an exam room with him and we have requested that they allow us to continue being present for his appointments so that King has a better experience. They denied our request. I started questioning what was happening to King in the back that makes him all of a sudden "aggressive." During a follow up appointment last week, King injured himself under their care and ended up with stitches to both front paws. They claim he was trying to escape as they were trying to sedate him for a nail removal and bandage application. Their response to the injury was: "This is why we ask that you give him the necessary medications and why he needs to see a behavioralist." I don't think we even received an apology. This was the last straw for me. I knew I had to remove my dog from this traumatic situation. NOW TO THE GOOD STUFF--I frantically called EVERY veterinary center in a 10-15 mile radius as King was due for a bandage change. Each vet office told me the same thing: We cannot perform a bandage change or sedation with you present in the treatment room. I almost gave up until I called McGrath Veterinary Center and spoke with a woman who was willing to hear my story. Her name was Kelly and she deserves to be recognized for her kindness and understanding. After speaking with her, she said she would speak with one of the doctor's and give me a call back. To be honest, I didn't expect her to remember to call me back since they were very busy, BUT SHE DID! She stated that one of the doctors was willing to examine King and determine if a bandage change could be done with us present in the exam room, but she didn't make any promises, which we were ok with! THANK YOU FOR TAKING A CHANCE ON US DR. BRAUNSTEIN! Again, we weren't expecting much to come out of the visit. I was prepared to witness the "aggressive/dangerous dog" that our regular vet kept telling us we had. Two male staff members worked on King, Jorge and Paolo. They also deserve praise and recognition for how they handled King. They were able to remove and re-apply new bandages without having to sedate King. THANK YOU PAOLO AND JORGE FOR TRUSTING US AND KING. This whole team was truly amazing and made me realize that staff at veterinary offices do NOT get enough credit for what they do! I hope this review makes a small difference! For the record--King did not growl, snap, or try to bite anyone during this visit. If you are a pet owner, please advocate for your animal and do your research before taking them to just any vet office! We highly recommend McGrath Veterinary Center!

The facility is very inviting and clean. The staff are fantastic— friendly, efficient, and great at handling the animals to not cause them any unnecessary stress. They are thorough, but don’t try to push you into anything not needed. While they aren’t cheap, I feel that their prices are very fair for the quality of service I’ve received.

Dr. McGrath is very professional, caring and an amazing doctor. He & his staff handled an emergency - I thought my dog might have been bitten by a snake & it was a scary experience. Fortunately with the superior care and expertise she received, my 2 year old labrador was seen right away, underwent blood tests and a full evaluation and is just fine. The care is more expensive here but the place is amazing... very clean, friendly staff and caring doctors & the extended hours enabled me to take my dog at 6:30 p.m.
