How to Save Money at VCA Animal Hospital of Santa Cruz

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Find another vet with better trained staff and more time to pay attention. VCA Santa Cruz vet techs traumatized my 11-week-old puppy. They show no awareness of dog’s behavior needs — like to give them a few seconds to smell a instrument or hand before shoving a thermometer in their ear, or not to over-stimulate them before an invasive procedure). It seems like they prioritize squeezing the most appointments into a single day, rather than quality care/time. There was vomit in my dog’s carrier when I picked her up that went unnoticed by the staff. We found a new vet and I suggested others look elsewhere.

VCA has been my go to Vet ever since the first week that I adopted my pup a little over a year ago. She had a bad reaction to a vaccine she had gotten from the shelter. As a new dog mom, I was extremely concerned and due to the positioning, thought there was something wrong with her microchip, which had also just been put in. VCA got me in right away, even though I had called other, more urgent animal care centers who said they would not be able to see me. The people at VCA are so warm, sweet, friendly, put the animals at ease, and make sure your pet (and you!) feel fully taken care of at the end of your appointment. I had an appointment this morning for some routine vaccines and they took such great care of my dog, Stella. She can get a little bit nervous, but they made her feel right at home, let me be with her while she got her shot, and gave her so much love afterwards that she left there in great spirits! Big shout out to Melissa and Michelle at the front for being so welcoming and kind, and Ellen for administering the vaccine so well that my pup didn’t even seem to notice! Could not recommend this place more highly.

The VCA team really care about your pet family. They genuinely care about my senior pup and understand how important he is to me.

Took caboodles my cat there she fractured her paw. They got her a cast and gave me an affordable plan to pay for everything. Good service all around but slow on getting results for her x-rays because they use a third-party. Still would recommend.

The manager Michelle is amazing and a life saver! My dog sitter for my husky puppy fell through the day before my trip and she was able to get him into boarding last minute. I could not be more thankful, not only did I still get to leave town but I felt good knowing he was safe. They even had the vet techs texting me updates and pictures. Let me just say her and her team are the reason I will not be switching vets for my three fur baby’s! Highly recommend!
