How to Save Money at Saugus Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Never go to Saugus Animal Hospital I’ve been going to Saugus Animal Hospital since we moved out here in 2015. I have had bad experiences with them messing up, like when they accidentally killed my Casper, and when they told me my Daisy was about to drop dead and then the cardiologist they referred me to said there was nothing wrong with her after running thousands of dollars of tests. But one thing I always thought was that they were nice. I had never had and interaction with the manager before today. I decided to leave Saugus Animal Hospital because I needed Daisy to be seen asap because of a bite or sting she got that she was having an allergic reaction too, and the receptionist laughed me off. I rushed out to the other facility I have to use (because Saugus Animal Hospital can never get me in in an emergency) to get Daisy treated and then thought, why am I still with this Vet when they have messed up so much and can’t even help me when I need them? I asked for all my files to be sent to me and when they missed sending me all of Casper’s files (my kitty that they killed) and the EKG, ultrasound, and ex ray they did on Daisy when they said she was going to drop dead (that appointment was for a runny nose and eyes), I called them to get the rest of the files. The receptionist I spoke to encouraged me to talk to a manager about Rye (the rude receptionist that laughed me off, that started in January 2023) and so Carl jumped on the phone. He was sarcastic, juvenile, and unprofessional. I called back, because I was bewildered at how rude someone can be to a client, a long time client and one that they have severely messed up with (killing a companion animal). I found out he has been there for 20 years and he is the one that runs everything even hiring the Vets and no one is above him. I understand if you go to Saugus Animal Hospital because you have some kind of loyalty to them because of frequency or duration, that was me, but eventually it will end bad. I’m not waisting my time with them anymore. Kindness is important and they are lacking it from the top.

Our family has been taking our pets to Dr. Laura and Saugus Animal Hospital for years. Dr. Laura and all of the staff do an excellent job and have always treated our dogs and cats with so much care and compassion. I have also never felt as if they were trying to sell me something that my pet doesn't need, which I appreciate tremendously in a vet office. The front office staff have also done a great job of providing me or my pet insurance provider with the info the provider needs to process the claim in a timely matter. I recommend Saugus Animal Hospital to everyone I can.

Wonderful place to visit. Took my dog Dakota in for a couple of vaccinations and nail clipping. It was our first time and we were treated very friendly. She was in and out within a few minutes. Excellent service here.

Hi, We would like to thank Dr Ehrman, Dr Baylor and the entire office staff. Our beloved Lola was in their care for the last 14 years. Lola always received the service that we expected. We found the office was attentive and always accommodating. We highly recommended Saugus Animal Hospital. We recently received the card posted below via mail. We felt that we should personally thank everyone that took time to recognize Lola.
