How to Save Money at Silicon Valley Pet Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Absolutely incredible support for my kitty. He’s Mr. Health Problems so he’s been here twice for some pretty major issues. Both times they’ve been so encouraging and helpful. They’re very clear about pricing and what will or will not be used on the procedure. I’m definitely going to be coming here for future kitty related medical care. Thanks for everything!

I've tried to see the good in this place for almost 2 years now. . . . It shouldn't be this difficult. This vet does not care about the animal, they focus on the wallet. I've spent thousands with this vet. Don't be complacent, if you have a strange feeling get a second opinion. My doing so may have saved my dogs life. It's all buddybuddy , they'll rip you off with a smile. Today was something simple but it was the last straw. My lil buddy is constipated and I'm out of state. My vet refused to give me any advice other than to pick up tge prescription for constipation when I got back into town. The vet highly advised against miralax which 2 separate vets told me to start immediately with some pumpkin. (Anything to push those prescription meds $$$) Being too nice will hurt you AND your dog if you keep giving this vet the benefit of the doubt. Find a vet that Loves animals. It's cut throat in the bay area. Vets play on your emotions and prey on your savings account.

I did NOT like this place at all. I HATE HATED my experience. My dog had blood in his stool and had diarrhea, which is a huge concern. I took him in to get checked just to be safe. No friendly greeting. The vet was especially unfriendly. Didn't try and pet my dog and warm up to him at all. The overall treatment for my very skittish dog was just the worst I've ever seen from people who work in the "pet industry". The price was outrageous and they seemed like all they wanted was for me to pay a bunch of money for something that may not even be necessary and didn't even fully listen to my concerns. I would never go back here and don't suggest anyone to go here.

(1) I had asked for a 3 year rabies shot and instead they put her age as 3 years after telling them she was born in 2015 and was almost 8. Needless to say they gave her a one year shot. (2) Make sure to research and call other vets before allowing treatment. My dog had a ruptured gland, no fever, minimal swelling. Nothing close to photos available on a google search. The proposed course of action is seen in the photo. Both the internet and 3 other vets advised against the Drs recommendations here. After only authorizing the typical recommended procedure it saved me $850+. The course of action recommended by all other sources was expression of glands, antibiotics and pain killer which is all I consented to. After the treatment - The Dr said it was obviously unnecessary to express the ruptured gland but was able to express the other one. This leads me to wonder what gland he was planning to lance and place a drain.

We have taken all our animals here, 2 kittens and a dog. We have had our female kitten spayed here, our male kitten had his leg amputated and our male dog has received treatment from this clinic. I have not encountered a single negative thing here. The vet techs have always been helpful and understanding. The prices here were way more reasonable than anywhere we checked. If you need emergency care for your pet at a rate that won't absolutely destroy your finances come here. Thank you Silicon Valley Pet Clinic team, you saved both our kittens for us and we can't thank you enough!
