How to Save Money at Advanced Veterinary Specialists
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

My dog was acting strangely one night, off balance and rocking back and forth. I was able to drive her to this place around 1am on a Saturday. The aide and the vet were very professional and I felt like I was in good hands.

My dog has seizures and we have made quite a few trips to AVS. The staff is consistently compassionate, kind, and professional. I always know my girl is in great hands under their care, and we are so thankful for their genuine commitment to helping pets and their families

We recently had to put our dog down. The Staff, Techs, and Doctor treated he and us with the utmost care and compassion. Such a difficult situation made only better by the dignity and respect you all showed to him, and us.

The least empathetic humans and obnoxious secretary on the phone. They are the only office that carries my dog's hydrolyzed Rx diet in this area on a Saturday night and refused to sell me a bag as a one time emergency case even though I have updated RX and vets notes and they have the food behind their counter! Never heard of such a thing. Clearly not in the business of care👎

#1 they never gave me a prescription to get the proper food for my cat who has crystals by the way. But when he was discharged all I was given was a paper with the medication to keep him on. I had to get him tested again at a follow up appointment with a different vet before we were given the proper information. My cat in fact had many crystals that I was not told about. #2 we ordered the food from chewy (which the account name was under my girlfriends name) we sit there and are waiting days, yet it’s been declined because no prescription? So I call, the lady tells me “oh i’ll go ahead and tell them to authorize it” we wait again, just for nothing to happen, now we’ve been told they rejected it this morning because the account name on chewy doesn’t match my last name? What sense does this make considering the receptionist asked me for a secondary name and number to add to our AVS account or whatever which was the name we ordered on chewy with. It’s an CATS SCRIPT DIET… Why is it so serious. And we wouldn’t have ever found out had we not called. They didn’t bother to tell us any information. Thank you AVS, If this was a serious condition, my cat would be dead right now. They tried to make my girlfriend feel stupid for putting her name instead of mine on the chewy order meanwhile they just ignored the fact that her name + number is literally listed on our AVS account - Gf then calls to tell them this and all he can say is “yeah that’s our mistake so what can i do for you?” with an attitude, LOL maybe do your job and authorize the script instead of making it 10x more difficult than it needs to be. What a JOKE - But why are we surprised, it’s Santa Barbara, nothing here is good.
