How to Save Money at Santa Ana Veterinary Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I have been bringing my animals to the Santa Ana veterinary hospital for at least 10 to 15 years now. They have always been excellent. Last week, one of our cats was very, very ill. The staff was loving and caring. Unfortunately, we brought Jinx in way too late. I just kept thinking she was going to be OK but she was not ok. I want to thank all of you at SAVH for how well you treated us and for making the last moments on this earth comfortable for our cat.

WORST EXPERIENCE OF MY LIFE!!! I took my 6-month-old puppy here due to her having some stomach issues because of something she had eaten. The Dr and I discussed what needed to be done, which was abdominal exploratory surgery. Unfortunately, my pup did not make it and "died by choking on her vomit under anesthesia." At the time, we were extremely distraught with what had just happened, so we just believed they did the best they could to help her and said our last goodbyes. The very same day the Dr informs us about the cremation process (group(free) private($), we decided private and selected the urn. He said it would take about a week for us to receive her ashes. Fast forward to TWO WEEKS. I got a call from the office to notify me that they had mislabeled my puppy and did her as a group cremation instead of a private cremation . I still can not seem to understand how this mistake could have happened. How negligent can they be it's been a very traumatic situation to deal with to know I'll never have her ashes with me . PLEASE !! THINK TWICE ABOUT TAKING YOUR FUR BABIES HERE!

I had brought my dog to this vet and when I got him back he got a black eye and scratches all over his neck like if he had gotten choked. When I gave him to the nurse he was not like that until I had got him back. I asked what had happened and the nurse acted if she didn’t know. I will consider to sue this place.

Do not take your pets here! They do not have your pet's best interests at heart! I took my sick 1.5 lb puppy and she was diagnosed with parvo. I knew right that second she was much too small to survive. I asked the vet if euthanasia was the best choice to which he gave me a bewildered shocked look and told me he's seen "many" puppies survive parvo and gave my pup a 50/50 chance but was very optimistic based on how "good" she looked. He saw my distress and took advantage of it selling me false hope!!!!! 24 hours later her condition deteriorated and she was showing clear signs of hypovolemic shock at her follow up appointment. Again, I inquired about euthanasia in the best interest of my puppy and AGAIN the vet LIED to me and told me my puppy "doesn't look worse to me" and I believed him continuing her out patient treatments. Less than 24 hours later she died. I should have followed my heart and put her down! She should of had an easy, peaceful goodbye.... NOT THE HORRENDOUS PAINFUL SLOW DEATH SHE DID HAVE THANKS TO THIS VETERINARIAN WHO GUILTED ME INTO PROLONGING HER SUFFERING!! Don't take your pets here!! I regret it!! A competent and caring vet would not take advantage of his patients in such a way!!
