How to Save Money at Veterinary Emergency Group

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

The staff was so friendly and amazing. I have never been able to stay with my pet during an operation. That meant everything. To top off for an even better experience, they explained everything that they were doing to my children and treated my kids like actual people. Amazing. Thank you for helping our dog and her puppies

We had a senior dog that nearing end of life. Due to her quality of life failing in the recent weeks, we had an appointment coming up with our regular vet. Unfortunately, she took a bad turn just a handful of days prior to her appt. and required emergency help. We went to VEG based on a recommendation from a friend, and our regular vet. I was told by multiple professionals and patients that their end of life care (given they are after hours clinic) is outstanding and recommended if needed (sadly, we did need it). We were more than pleasantly surprised that the total cost for this visit to VEG was within +/- $20.00 of what our expected expense for visiting our normal vet for the same services. I know there are often additional costs associated with clinics that run 24/7 days a week, however, the pricing ranged from our non-urgent expectation, to 2-5 times hire at other emergency vets. The most expensive emergency vet (who I have been recommended to many many times) wanted close to a thousand dollars more and for us to take out a line of credit. At VEG, we were treated as if our beloved dog and our family have been known to them. They were very friendly and prompt. They helped you navigate the registration process in private. They took you through all of the procedures and options, before they went to cost. Only then did you have to make a decision and discuss options for pricing, etc,. During this visit to VEG, the family was given the opportunity to spend as much time as we wished with our pet before the process started, in a private, serene, and very comfortable private room. They included us in on the decision making, and allowed the family to choose the pace that things would progress. Dr. Julia is an amazing veterinarian. The technicians names (and there were 3 or more we encountered) were equally outstanding, but sadly, I did not get their names. They exude kindness, compassion and sincerity. It was obvious the staff have an extraordinary amount of love, compassion, and empathy for all animals (and their humans!). At the very end of the process, we were heartbroken and emotional exiting through the main clinic and recall the almost silence, despite it being packed, as we left. It was evident almost everyone there, staff or customer, was aware of the heartbreak we just endured really tried to show empathy and sorrow which was palpable. In some strange way, it was very comforting, yet a bit awkward given the almost dead silence. VEG will be our ER vet of choice going forward. I cannot say enough good things about the clinic, the staff, their services, administration and pricing. Most importantly, the highest recommendation for the the exceptional group of humans who work there really make it an amazing place. Even during a really difficult set of circumstances, you could feel a very genuine, professional, caring vibe. The services were outstanding and I can see why everyone has such positive things to say about VEG. I highly recommend VEG and Dr. Julia based on our experience.

Our 9 yr old Aussie Cooper was in bad shape on a Sunday. VEG took him right in and to say they did a fantastic job is an understatement. We have been to a lot of vet clinics. This one is different. None of the, "We haven't seen your dog/Cat before so" (take a hike...) None of that. They had a crew on him within one minute of walking in the door before we even filled out any paperwork- shocking right-, it was crazy good compared to the 10 other vet clicks we have been to over the decades. I really liked the way the place is laid out- all open with the tables there in full view. We stayed with Cooper the entire time and everyone can see exactly what's going on. all of the staff worked together well- Special thanks to Michaelia but everyone was great, I just didn't catch all of their names. Fair pricing and they did not try to talk us into more which [would have been easy, Cooper has a tumor on his heart] I rarely give reviews...and never 5 star...VEG was great, thanks to everyone in their crew!

Our rabbit passed away today after 11 years. We were on our way with him to VEG to put him to sleep, but he passed away in the car. We arrived anyway, my daughter insisted, and VEG was so amazing and compassionate. They provided a small animal coffin and had lined it with a pad inside. I forget her name, but I was blown away with the service and the facility. The room I was brought to was very peaceful, decorated with very fine details like candles, and inspirational artwork. I had never been to this facility in the past, but it’s good to know if we need a fully functional emergency vet in the future, that we would be in great hands

I've been here several times for different reasons. I have 5 dogs so there are times when I need a place that is open 24 hours and would calm my anxiety if we could find out what's going on right away. I like that you can call in to let them know you are coming ( pre check in). At first I didn't know how I felt about seeing everything happening with other pets but then I thought about the many times I wish I knew where my regular vet is taking my dog to during regular check ups. So I feel this is a benefit for those that wants to hold their pet when they are getting checked, shots, IV etc. And if you can't handle it, you can always stay in the other room or leave your pet there. I just feel like it helps my anxiety and fears in a sense that I don't make up my own prognosis. I am constantly updated and not forgotten. They can be busy in the evening or weekends (just an FYI) but the times I've been there when it's busy we still are seen. You can stay with your pet! So if your pet needs you to be there overnight...you can stay with them. So for me this all works completely. I also had another friend who needed emergency surgery for their dog and it was done and the dog lives! I've been here for my dog Kahlua who has seizures, my dog Luna who had an allergic reaction to something, my sister dogs Lilikoi and Maitai had their spayed stitches looked at. I came back recently November 2024 for my pet Lilikoi who was vomiting, not eating and crying over stomach pain - they got to the problem within hours after checking off other possible issues. Thanks Dr. Alex & team! Don't hesitate to come here and be a part of holding your fur love paws while they get check. I see them constantly clean, communicate with each other, its like everyone has everyone covered. The bathrooms are spotless. The front desk even ask if I needed water or a more comfortable chair. In their semi wait room they have things that kids can play with so you know they think about families coming all together for their beloved fur animal. So I'm more than satisfied and I trust the process here.
