How to Save Money at SoMa Animal Hospital
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.
Reviews from Google
I’ve brought my dog here since he was 8 weeks. On my first visit as a first time dog owner, Dr Wood spent a lot of time answering all of my questions and making me and Bear feel comfortable. The doctors, nurses, and receptionists have been so caring for us ever since. They take time on the phone to check with the doctors when we have issues as well as scheduling us in when necessary. I don’t know any other vet but after reading the reviews, I seem to have gotten lucky.

The whole gang here are good people to deal with and they have plenty of private waiting rooms to keep pets isolated from one another. Convenient dog park accross the street. Parking isn't always easy requiring a little patience but there is a drop off spot right out front. Niki in the front was very warm and welcoming.

I love dr Johnston! He is very approachable and informative, I haven’t trusted any other vet with my babies (and I have quite a few of them) and he has always shown great respect and support to my decisions as the pet parent even during very difficult times. This is also the only clinic which I can bring my cat in without gabapentin. It’s been hard to find a great veterinarian who not only does domestic animals but also exotics as well, and he definitely has experienced with many other animals besides cats and dogs! He will even send lab samples to specialists so you don’t have to travel around and get an appointment with specialists outside the bay area! The support staff has also been very compassionate and accommodating which I truly appreciate given the amount of patients they have! Labs and tests might take a couple days to a week to get results since they most likely outsource it, but other than that this animal hospital is pretty great compared to all I have been to

First of all I feel like people should cut vets some slack. There is a shortage and most vet staff are severely overworked. That said my experience at Soma Animal Hospital has been fantastic. It's more expensive than some higher volume clinics in the city but I work hard to give my pets a better life! I have seen three doctors here and all have been patient, friendly, and knowledgeable. They take a low/ no fear approach and don't force any handling, meaning my dogs have no negative associations with coming here. I never feel rushed and I get plenty of time to ask all my questions, plus the vets remember my dogs despite only seeing them once a year. Grateful to be able to bring them here.

Sometimes the responsiveness is a little slow when contacting via text or phone, but they always end up following through. Things can take a while to get done at appointments. Otherwise, the vets here are fantastic and really take time to talk with you about your concerns. I’ve been to other vets before that push lots of extra tests and procedures that didn’t always seem necessary, but I never felt that way here. They explain options for what can be done and let you decide what you’d like to do. Yet I still felt like they were being very thorough. They even taught me how to give my dog his injections at home and supplied me directly with the medication which was very convenient. Parking can be tricky which is challenging if you are bringing your pet via car. There is a lot of street parking available, but it is almost always four because residence in the area use those spots.
