How to Save Money at San Francisco SPCA Spay & Neuter Clinic
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.
Reviews from Google
The online scheduling was so easy and check in /check out are very streamlined. I was concerned maybe interns would do the procedures but licensed veterinarians do them and my cat was perfectly fine after, no issues at all. Neuters of a kitten are so quick and minimally invasive (I didn't know!) so he did just fine, didn't even have to wear the cone. I would definitely use the SF SPCA again for any spay/neuters or other issues with my cat.

I took my puppy to get spayed at the SPCA. The experience was really great (as good as it could have been considering the circumstances). The vet spent a lot of time with me reviewing the procedure and aftercare and answered all my questions. When I had a concern about my puppy the next day, I was quickly directed to bring her into triage. The atmosphere was understanding and calm. I am definitely going to switch to the SF SPCA for all of her care.

Absolutely wonderful staff all around. They truly love pets over there and they are just the most experienced and professional when it comes to spaying procedure. Parking is easy and free in lot next door. Waiting room is wide enough to offer separation between dogs. They are quick to check you in. Nurses, and Vets are caring and friendly, while very professional checking all the history and concerns you may have. Surgery went well, minimum scar compared to our other dog we did at the regular vet. If the SPCA wasn't on the opposite side of town from where I live I would go there for regular vet services as well. Highly recommend.

Our male cat was spraying in the house and my husband was getting scared we might have to give him and his sister up (they are a bonded pair). We called the SF SPCA and spoke with the receptionist Diego. He listened to me and acknowledged how scared I was. He checked in with staff and was able to squeeze us in since he felt the situation was dire and he sensed the urgency in my voice. We were accommodated for a Wednesday and when we arrived, my husband and I were treated with kindness, empathy and respect. Our vet talked with us and addressed our fears and concerns. She talked to us about additional resources to provide our cats with since we also had a 14-year-old German Shepherd and that might also be the cause of tension. Our male cat stopped spraying following the neuter and his behavior has shifted for the better! The staff sent us home with pain medicine for both cats, two cones and then a FAQ sheet with an emergency number in the event something happened. Our cats nails were trimmed as well and we got a follow up call to see how they were doing. I am so grateful to the SF SPCA and the staff there for their respect, kindness and their attentiveness. Our cats are doing so well and we didn’t experience any complications after the surgery. Our cats had a great recovery.

SF SPCA is above average as a pet clinic to take one's pet to for treatment or sterilization. I have taken several of my pets here over the years and am never let down. I highly recommend coming here. The fees can't be beat and one saves a ton of money, in addition to the great care.
