How to Save Money at San Francisco Animal Medical Center

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Where to begin? I will try to condense this review as much as possible. I love sf amc and their doctors. I have known one of the internal medicine doctors, Dr. Ybarra, for a few years now. We worked together at a previous specialty practice and I saw first hand her high quality of care and compassion she had for each of her patients. I personally took my own pets to her. She diagnosed my 4month old puppy almost 3 years ago with renal dysplasia and because of her care and recommendations my dog is now 3 years and doing really well despite her disease. So when she left previous hospital to come to sf amc it wasn't even a question if whether I would make the drive to sf for her to continue caring for my dog. Fast forward to 2 weeks ago, our other older dog started showing signs of illness and I took him to our local emergency(I live 45min away from sf amc) where he was diagnosed with severe kidney failure. You can imagine the stress and tears not knowing if our dog could recover or if we would even be able to take him home again. I contacted Dr. Ybarra asking about getting our dog transferred to sf. Amc and she reassured Me we could if its what we wanted and he would be in good hands. We do have per insurance but our yearly limit is not very high for the amt of care and hospitalization our dog might need. Dr. Ybarra was amazing and really helped delegate our available funds to what was priority in getting our dog better if possible. This allows us to keep him in hospital for a longer amount of time. My heart is filled with gratitude and everyone at sf amc from the front desk to the ccu team who each showed kindness at such a heart wrenching time for us. Our dog went home yesterday and will continue care at sf amc for hopefully a long happy life.

Amazing care and compassion. We recently lost our dear dog, Roscoe. He was 11 years old and had a good end to his life because of the brilliant vets at SF Animal Medical Center. He had a great last couple of years because of Dr. Ybarra, who was referred to us by Dr. Reid. My husband and I both work with doctors and we have never, ever met a more accomplished, brilliant, thoughtful and seasoned veterinarian as Dr. Ybarra. Honestly, I seriously imagined how much I would have loved to work with her when I saw medical patients in the medical hospitals I used to work. Dr. Ybarra is the most savvy and gifted vet we have ever met. She saved his life many times and gave him more time as she was the only one who ever diagnosed him correctly. We can't express enough how incredible she is. She's also a dog whisper and Roscoe loved her. It is only because of her that Roscoe would go into that building without being afraid. Unfortunately, Roscoe's symptoms and decline developed fast, and we decided he was suffering too much and could not wait for Dr. Ybarra or his other outside vet who does home visits to euthanize him. We brought him in to the office and saw Dr. Hutton. Roscoe is the third dog we have had to euthanize, and this was the best experience we have had. We were wary about doing this at the office, but Dr. Hutton was kind and warm and reassured us we were doing the right thing (though we had that assurance from Dr. Ybarra and his outside vet), but we needed that reassurance as having a pet die in this way is always excruciating and Roscoe's decline was swifter than we were prepared for. Her bedside manner was incredible, as well as the vet tech who offered Roscoe a tasty last meal. Unlike other pet passings, this process was beyond seamless, and the protocol Dr. Hutton used allowed Roscoe to pass quickly in a peaceful way. I thought we would be in the office for hours and yet the staff made this awful event as easy as it could be. To be clear, we did let staff know that we would be coming in and they were ready when we arrived. We've had nothing but good experiences with the phone and support staff as well, including one of the front desk staff chatting with us and our dogs while we were waiting for bad news in an earlier visit. The dogs loved how they gave them treats and attention. We are forever in their debt and can't express our appreciation enough.

This was my second visit to this medical center. I brought my 10 year old rescue in bc she was limping from an old surgery done 9 years ago. Dr. MacFarlene was great. She listened to my dog’s history and what I thought would work treatment wise (since we’d encountered this before). She gave a my dog a thorough exam of the area and provided her thoughts so that I could make an informed decision. We agreed on doing some follow up bloodwork, since it’d been 6 years since the last time and it was more to be prudent. We got some medication to help with the limping. One day later, bloodwork cane back stellar and Izzy’s limp is so much better. The staff was also very professional. My only concern was that the medication was on the pricier side than what I’d seen online, but the pharmacist indicated that their online prices are more competitive than what you but in the medical center. I checked and it is 100% true! (Better than Chewy or Petco even).
