How to Save Money at Modern Animal

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Can’t say enough great things about these guys. Of course, I love the digital experience, convenience, and millennial / gen z targeted features (want a la croix or trendy water while you wait?) — but WAY more than that, I love the way they treat my pup and me. Every staff member I’ve encountered has exceptional bedside manner. I usually get flustered at the vet (and obviously my dog could not imagine a worse place in the world), and yet, we both always calm down, have well articulated conversations about what’s going on, enjoy some treats, take a breath … But seriously, it’s really wild the trust they can build with my anxious rescue pup in such a short time. And I feel like I can get her better care because I’m at ease too. I also really appreciate how transparent they are about costs, sincerely offering trade offs at different decision points. Thanks, Modern Animal! I’ll cherish these early days where I can get a next day appointment at a moments notice. But you guys deserve lots more business as you grow!

I cannot say enough positive things about Modern Animal's caring staff, both in-person and on their app, and the exceptional care that they provide to Charlie 🐶. From the moment we walked into the office, we were greeted with warm smiles and a genuine interest in Charlie's well-being. As always, Dr. Joaris and her personnel took the time to listen and understand Charlie's post-op conditions, and were showering him with love and kindness 💚. During each visit, Dr. Joaris makes us feel like we are her only patient, taking the time to answer our questions and explain her recommendations. She never rushes through an appointment and always makes us feel valued and respected. Dr. Joaris is a truly caring and compassionate veterinarian, and a wonderful person. She truly loves animals, and it shows in the way she interacts with Charlie. We are grateful for her expertise and the excellent care she provides to our furry friend. Thank you, Dr. Joaris and Modern Animal's staff, for all that you do for Charlie!

I really like the location and service we get at this vet. We liked it much better than our prior vet experience. We like that with the subscription model we are able to more easily schedule appointments, and they are very attuned to how the pet (a cat in my case) is feeling. If it's too much for the cat at one time, it's simple to reschedule the following day or even later that same week. Thanks y'all!

Very pleased with my experience so far! We obtained free membership ($199) for a year since the new Berkeley location is opening up soon. We went to the Nopa location in SF since we were going to the city to visit family. We've been to 3 different vets/clinics in the east bay (VCA, vip pet care, Berkeley dog and cat). We didn't like our experiences at any of these places. However Modern animal was the first experience we had where we were happy after leaving! They have an app with very easy scheduling. One thing I don't like about vets in the bay area is the wait to get seen! Most vets you have to wait weeks for an appointment, unless you go to ER, but that's expensive. We signed up for an morning appointment at modern animal the night before! This location has a free parking lot! Something I appreciate since SF parking is hard to find. Facilities are new and clean and receptionists are friendly and everyone loves your pet! They have complementary drinks as well. Dr Peng and assistant with initials N.C. (sorry! We forgot your name, but we'll see you again when the Berkeley location opens up) were awesome! My dog had an ear problem so we went in. The nurse assistant was very nice and so was the doctor! Things were explained well and they handled my dog very well! They know he was a big puppy and might not like his ears checked out so they were gentle and took things slow to make sure he wasn't traumatized. The service was really good! We will renew our membership since getting your pet seen early is important to us and going to the ER 2 times is already more than the membership fee. Also excited for the Berkeley location to open! P.S. Thanks for the wool bone!

Nice modern vet clinic with new equipment, many staff, and lots of availability since they just opened recently. This is a private clinic, so you need to buy an annual membership before you can make an appointment and it doesn't seem like they offer trial visits. The visits themselves are free and you just pay for treatments, but I imagine that means the costs of treatment are likely higher. They have a model of transparency where they offer to do most tests in front of you, so you can stay with your pet the whole time. It was helpful to keep my anxious kitty calm. It was also interesting for me to see how they did each test or took each sample. They also show you a breakdown of what everything will cost before doing any tests or procedures. I also really appreciated the detailed explanations sent via the app along with my cat's test results. They clearly explained what the results meant, provided links to where I could find more information, and outlined next steps. Having all of the info in writing vs. communicated over a voice mail or live phone call was very helpful so that I have a record I can refer back to. One drawback is that all appointment bookings and communications take place through a phone app. It doesn't seem like they have an option to do this on your computer and I was unable to find a phone number or email address. This is a bit frustrating if the selections on the app don't fit nicely with your issue or if you have any questions that are easier to discuss live.
