How to Save Money at Veterinary Emergency Group
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I would love to thank Dr. Cain and her efforts in trying to save our bunny who was in critical condition. She is very knowledgeable and showed much care. I also like to thank all the nurses who helped Oreo and kept her comfortable. Everyone was quick to assist Oreo. I would like to thank the male nurse who was monitoring her for many hours and keeping her comfortable. Unfortunately our Oreo passed away 8 hrs later. We are thankful that we were able to take her home and have more time with her before she passed. We kept her comfortable and warm. Giving her love and kisses before she passed. We deeply miss Oreo and thankful that Dr. Cain and her nurses did everything they could to save Oreos life. The staff there have a great passion in taking care of pets! Here are some photos I like to share of our bunny Oreo. She was 9 and lived a full happy life ❤️

VEG San Diego provided the best veterinary care I have ever seen! From the moment we walked in with our dog, Riley, they made us feel cared for. They put us in a private room and Dr. Kalb was in to check on us minutes later. I cannot say enough great things about Dr. Kalb- the best Vet I’ve ever seen. He showed us such generosity and kindness. Plus, he maintained such a steady hand for Riley’s stitches. Dr. Kalb and ALL of the veterinary nurses and assistants were incredible. They ALL cared for & comforted Riley. Not only did they care for Riley but they cared for us as well. When i was watching Riley get her stitches, one of the amazing vet nurses/assistants saw i was cold and wrapped a blanket around me. The entire time we were there, i could not believe how kind every single person truly was. Unbeatable experience! VEG San Diego will be the only emergency vet we go to from now on!

A totally different experience in veterinary care. We appreciated the quick service and the friendly staff. They helped to make a difficult experience bearable, and it was nice to be able to be with our cat throughout the whole process. CreamPuff enjoyed the private room so that he didn’t have to worry about all the dogs that were there (it was late and there was space open so it made it easier to be removed form the open room). P.S. CreamPuff apologizes for leaving so much white fur on the black chair, but it was so comfortable that he had to sit on it…

I have nothing but wonderful things to say about VEG Animal Hospital in Mission Valley. My two cats, Toast & Butter, came in with a bad reaction to an over-the-counter anti-fungal medication. The staff was friendly and took my concerns very seriously. My older cat Toast was fortunately able to be discharged much sooner than my kitten, and I was sent with clear discharge information. They also ensured that if her symptoms worsened or her health changed, that she would be seen right away. My kitten, Butter, was much more severe and needed a lot more support. He needed oxygen therapy, IV fluids and steroids. His comfort was their top priority. Their open floor plan allowed my mom, boyfriend and I to be present with Butter for much of the day. They allowed me to hold him during small medical procedures to help keep him calm; I held him during an ultrasound & whenever they needed to flush his IV. They even let me bring this favorite blanket to get through the night… I’d like to also ensure to thank Dr. Swan, nurse Erica, Dr. Smallcomb & another staff member with dark hair & pretty pink highlights (I did not catch her name) for taking such great care of Butter. I am forever thankful for the care you provided both of my cats. They were transparent with me and my family through the whole process. If you ever find yourself in an emergency situation with your pet, do not hesitate to go to VEG in Mission Valley.

I could go on and on about how fantastic the team at VEG was with my cat, Griffin. They immediately saw us, they were extremely friendly, caring, and professional. The staff is knowledgeable and helpful. We saw Dr. Cain and she was so helpful with our treatment plan and helping get our cat to feeling better. As a veterinary professional it’s hard to find places that feel like they actually care about your pet and aren’t just rushing through stuff. I felt 100% confident leaving griffin in their care and will absolutely be back should we (hopefully not) have another emergency. They truly care about your pets and worked with us to make a plan that will work with our budget. Thank you so much to the veterinarians, technicians, and support staff for helping us out during this difficult time!
