How to Save Money at Torrey Pines Animal Hospital
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I'm a new dog owner to my puppy Archer. Archer has been going to TPAH since the day after I brought him home and he and I are so happy to have found this place as our vet. I debated between here and another vet office nearby, but when I called both places for information, TPAH gave me so much peace of mind and relevant information. Jennifer was the one that answered my first call and was so helpful with questions I had when choosing a vet and questions I had in general about their practice. Archer has seen Dr. Sophie Steele for all but 1 visit where he saw Dr. Tannler after Archer had an accident. I love that TPAH is open 7 days a week and does see urgent visits. Above all else, I appreciate and love the staff! Jennifer and Dara at the front desk are so kind and friendly and knowledgeable. Dr. Sophie Steele is so patient with the endless questions I have as a nervous first time puppy owner. She's super knowledgeable and always gives Archer and I her undivided attention. Dr. Tannler is so kind and friendly and also knowledgeable, so I can only imagine the whole panel of vets are phenomenal and you can't go wrong with who you see. David, Emily and other vet techs whose names are escaping me have always been friendly, patient, and caring for any concerns, no matter how small. I've called the office so many times about the littlest things and they never make me feel bad about my concerns and encourage me to call if I ever need anything!

We are exceptionally impressed with Dr. Brad Steele and the team for squeezing in time during a fully booked day to re-suture our dog’s paw since her stitches done at an emergency hospital reopened. Thank you for the kind and clear instruction with greater detail and care compared to the other hospital! We also appreciated Dr. Sophie Steele, our pcp who did such a quick and painless needle aspiration for out other dog. We are glad to get care for both of our dogs at Torrey Pines Animal Hospital! Probably not the cheapest vet but great care.

I absolutely hate writing a bad review for any Veterinary practice, but this place has issues. Their phone system is awful and apparently the front desk cannot get it together. We have had issues with every visit, but the one today was ridiculous. I made an appointment for my cat, specifically stating she was coming in for her flea medication. They insisted that she needed another full exam for it. They know what she's on, and I confirmed the specific medicine on the phone twice! I get there for the appointment and we are taken back just to be informed that they are out of the medicine. They could have called or better yet, saved the medicine for her,, knowing she was coming in for it. They completely wasted my time, and my cat vomited in the car when we had to rush to find another Vet where she could get this medicine. Unfortunately she has been on many different medicines for fleas and this is the only one that is effective. This was just not a good experience and they should really get it together when charging outrageous prices. We will go elsewhere in the future.

Very pleasant and helpful and responsive staff. The vet was extremely kind and took his time meeting us. So this is a great place if cost is not of any concern. Not great for us as the services are way overpriced. After going here for routine check up visits out of convenience, I realized that all their services are almost twice some other animal hospitals.

This is the best vet in San Diego by far! We've been going there for 2 years and seen a couple of different vets, and every single one has been kind and knowledgeable. No matter the issue, they handle it professionally and make you feel reassured through the whole process. I've recommended many friends to come here and I will keep doing so. My pup has had pretty major surgery here and they have handled it perfectly and my pup was completely recovered within a week and is back to her usual self. I can't recommend them enough!!
