How to Save Money at Penasquitos Pet Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

We have been dealing with a skin condition with our Shih Tzu (Chanel) for a year and half. Her condition had caused her to loose much of her hair, with her skin bright red and brown spots forming all over her. We had been to three previous vets with no results. Dr Ray, spent almost a hour with us explaining her condition and a course of action. This was six weeks ago and we have followed his recommendations. Chanel has now started growing her hair back, redness in skin is gone, with the brown spots on skin fading almost completely away. She is now more active and like her previous self before all this happened to her. We wanted to say a special thanks to Dr Ray and his staff for all the great customer service and professionalism.

THIS CLINIC IS AWESOME!!! Ok, so our chihuahua scrounges where she wasn’t supposed to and eats an entire chicken drumstick overnight! Of course it just so happens on the same day that my fiancé has a flat tire and the truck needs to go to the shop! So, panic sets in that morning as to where we can be worked in to get Coco seen and evaluated. We call PEÑASQUITOS PET CLINIC and they immediately prepared to see her with no questions other than where else has she been to the vet. We split forces and my fiancé takes Coco while I deal with the tire. Skip ahead, and by the time the tire is taken back, PQ PET CLINIC conference calls us with the great news that Coco is fine, she’ll pass the chicken bones through and she’ll need maintenance for teeth and health soon. DR PICHT, CECEILIA, and the ENTIRE CLINIC get my HIGHEST RATING! Thank you all very much for being there in a pinch, being so thorough, and being so caring!

Penasquitos Pet Clinic was referred to me as I brought my new puppy home. We've been several times now for both completing our puppy shots, also an unexpected trip when my pup was sick for a few days and as an over-protective new fur mom I ran to the vet! Everyone here is super friendly, give lots of love and most importantly quality care. My pup loves visiting the vet as they always give her plenty of love to make the visit more enjoyable. I highly recommend!

Our cat had labored breathing, brought her in to see PQ Pet Clinic because our family vet is over 1 hour away. Had we of listened to Dr Ray at PQ Pet Clinic our cat would have been dead without a proper diagnosis. Her blood work confirmed that her WBC was high and she was fighting the infection. As of today our cat has returned to her healthy and normal self. Turns out our cat had a bad case of pneumonia that was aggressively treated by our 2nd opinion. 12 hours after starting treatment she made big improvements and was not labored breathing So thankful that we did not trust the advice of Dr Ray and Staff. We walked out of PQ Pet Clinic with an almost $800 bill and to redo X-rays, pet exam and treatment that included meds we walked out of our family vet paying less than $400. Thanks to our family Dr our cat is doing great :) Pro - [x] was able to get cat in right away - [x] Receptionist named Jessica is so genuine, kind, caring and professional Negative - - [x] charged for fees not approved, (IV for euthanasia which we declined. Office manager refused to refund the $75 - [x] dishonest (charged for 3 X-rays and only did 2 without telling us. The reason we knew was our second opinion vet told us there should have been 3. I called for them to send me the 3rd one which is how i found out. Refunded $55 only when the X-rays were over $300 - [x] Dr Ray claimed that our cat needed to be euthanized and that he was our cats advocate. Treated my mom and i as if we are cruel animal owners - [x] Dr Ray suggested we could “put a bandaid on the problem” and put a hole in her side to remove the fluid which is not the best option and will cost over $2k, later verified with our second opinion that her lung would have collapsed and she would have died if we did it. - [x] Spent 20+ minutes talking to Dr Ray before he would finally release our cat to us.
