How to Save Money at Integrative Veterinary Care
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

HIGHLY recommend Dr. Kangas and her team. I’ve always leaned on holistic practitioners in tandem with Western medicine for myself and do no different with my dogs. I lean on Dr. Kangas to provide as much veterinary care to my three rescue Weimaraners as she is willing and able to provide! I started seeing Dr. Kangas when I was struggling with my girl Gracie’s severe allergies. I started with a dermatologist who immediately recommended heavy duty steroids and prescription food indefinitely but I knew there was a better way. Enter Dr. Kangas. After food intolerance testing, some gut healing, and a short round of apoquel under Dr. Kangas’ guidance, my girl went from almost entirely hairless with pustules to a beautiful, glossy itch-free beauty ❤️. When I adopted our third girl who is severely reactive at the vet, Dr. Kangas and team welcomed her in and were SO patient with her even though we weren’t able to ultimately draw blood. Shout out to Teresa for waiting calmly while I tried to wrangle my pup ti no avail. The whole office made me feel so much less stress bringing her in than a conventional vet that would basically refuse to see her without a mountain of sedatives. I now live 40 minutes away from IVC but still make the trip for my pups’ care! Thank you IVC for all that you do!!

Dr. Katie Kangas is super talented, compassionate, and highly trained in probably every aspect of veterinary care, including all of the integrative modalities. Her diagnostic abilities are amazing. She is far more advanced than every other vet that I have met in North County. Which is many. Only a few others begin to compare with her, and that's because they have trained together. Dr. Kangas has a superb staff that is also very "tuned-in" and an ideal clinic setup. It is joy to be there, and have access to the chiropractic services and other extras that are very hard to find. She has a warm, caring, sensitive, and loving personality. When she needs to refer out, she knows the very best in the required field. She has lectured widely, and written on key topics that help prevent diseases and conditions that are not part of the conventional domain. Her expertise in nutritional care is only matched by a few. I have taken my golden retriever to her clinic now for about 5 years. Needless to say, I highly recommend her.

If you are in need of a compassionate veterinarian facility, I highly recommend looking elsewhere. My experience with Dr. Katie seemed positive, from what I could tell in my virtual and quick in person visits.. However, this practice is a prime example of how front desk staff can affect a customer’s viewpoint. I bit my tongue and overlooked the sad excuse of customer care I found in the front desk staff, in particular, “Raquel” on my first visit. She lacks the empathy and class of a staff member of a practice one would expect to be compassionate, especially when dealing with a “patient” in his last days. For her sake, I hope Raquel never experiences the heartbreak of losing a pet and that karma is just a theory. What a poor example of someone in a field you would think would have fellow feeling. The practice was quick to accept payment and make recommendations of supplements and additional costs to increase revenue, which I gladly paid in hopes of helping my dog. In my dog’s final days, thank goodness, I was able to speak with another vet able to answer less than five minutes worth of questions Integrative Veterinary “Care” couldn’t be bothered to address. The absolute worst experience of “care” I’ve experienced in 46 years on this earth. As a business owner, I recognize good help is hard to find. This vet has absolutely missed the mark in their choice of front desk staff.

Dr. Kangus has been the first small animal veterinarian that genuinely cared for my dog. Her office and staff are all geared toward making pets and their people relaxed and comfortable. She spend time with my pet, and was thorough and knowledgable in explaining her findings. The best part was I never had to be separated from my pet during the entire visit. I highly recommend Dr Kangus and Integrative Veterinary Care!

Dr. Katie and the staff at Integrative Vet Care are the best of the best. After living in San Diego for several years, we've jumped from vet to vet trying to find one that truly cares and takes the time to address not only symptoms, but causes... The species appropriate, holistic treatment is best in class here, and Dr Katie understands the need, when appropriate, for Western medicine as well. I just wish I could find a doctor this great for myself :)
