How to Save Money at Clairemont Village Pet Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

A friend of mine has been going to Dr. Diamond for over a decade and has always spoke highly of him. When her dog was experiencing health issues, she consulted nearly a dozen doctors and always went back to Dr. Diamond, despite moving to a different city. After adopting a wonderful little dog myself, I called around to all the local vets and pet hospitals to get quoted on a teeth cleaning. The prices have skyrocketed since the last time I was a pet owner with many places starting at $800. Dr. Diamond's prices were the most fair by far. After my first visit with Dr. Diamond, I could see why my friend trusted him so much for so many years. He doesn't push expensive services or tests, unlike other vets I encountered, is very reasonable, and a very kind soul. Since my dog is a rescue, I was worried how she would be at the vet but she just took to Dr. Diamond immediately and loved his vet techs, even after they drew her blood. He also diagnosed my dog's skin condition immediately and took his time to explain to me what had happened. I had taken her to another vet previously who insisted on every skin test they had and kept trying to promote their specialty dog food. Dr. Diamond confirmed it was a simple issue and my dog's skin improved within 24 hours of his diagnosis. I'm very grateful for vets like him that don't price gauge and utilize a worried parent's concerns, for their own benefit. I now happily understand the hype and can confirm it is well-deserved.

Dr. Diamond and the rest of Clairemont Village Pet Clinic staff have taken wonderful care of my cat Monty. They accommodated a same day appointment because of Monty’s declining health and took a comprehensive look at the issue. Dr. Diamond is thoughtful, practical, and genuinely cares about the health of the pets he sees. Prices are also reasonable compared to other vets/hospitals around. Would highly recommend this clinic to anyone!

The only place I trust with my ancient dogs care. I have been a client on and off through out my dogs 16 years of life. I rely on Dr. Diamond's practical, quality of life and reasonable approaches to health issues that come up over a dogs life. I can be a fairly crunchy granola nature mama when it comes to medical care like surgery and medications and although I can get side eye sometimes for it, I don't feel put down here for at least asking about options for various thing. Support staff have generally been kind, polite, and welcoming over the course of years (John is the best human). The cost is normal in SD and I even would drive from San Francisco to San Diego when we moved for clarity in my dogs health, now I drive from North County too.

There are no words to describe what an amazing place this is!! I have a big problem collecting dogs and I've been going here for over 22 years. Dr. Diamond and crew truly care about your beloved pets and do everything they can to help with preventative care and when sick. I can say this as I currently have 3 dogs, two with health issues and I'm literally always there. I won't lie there have been times I've been stressed out and a brat when going there but they are always so amazing and nice. Special thanks to all, Dr. Diamond, John, Tami, Heidi, Kevin, New awesome guy at front desk, and anyone else I've left out as you all are amazing there. You are so appreciated.
