How to Save Money at Banfield Pet Hospital
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.
Reviews from Google
I really should give this place ZERO stars. Trying to make an appointment is a living nightmare. I don’t know if I should continue to pay insurance for my cat here anymore. When you try to book online it says “please check on X date” I do and guess what there are NO available appointments. I tried calling and no one picks up the phone. The mail box is full so you can’t leave a message. Like why do I even bother? Please do yourself a favor and find a local veterinary office or find insurance somewhere else this place is not it.

Calling to request an appointment; no answer. Automated message says they're closed even though their posted hours claim they're open. Can't even leave a voicemail because voicemail box is full. Is this a joke? We owners care a lot about our pets and pay a lot for the Banfield care plan, but it's seriously useless. You can't get care (or even reach a person!) when you need it. Oh and then even when you get an appointment, they won't let you come back with your pet (which they claim is a COVID protocol but somehow every other vet has been able to drop that protocol), and they'll hold your pet for waaaaaaay longer than is necessary to do the basic examination they're supposed to be doing -- like HOURS longer -- it's just a way of increasing profits by warehousing all the pets back there without regard to the pet's experience, and keeping the pesky owners out so there's no accountability. I’m so so frustrated by the nonexistent care here.

I have called 3 times to be put on hold for 20 minutes and then forwarded to a voicemail, only to never receive a call back. I then drove to the location only to have them make me wait 15 minutes to address me. My dog was having a medical emergency and they told me that they couldn't get me in for 3 weeks and that I should just put a cone on him and be patient. I took him to Sage and they provided excellent care. If I had listened to Banfield, my dog would be blind. Been trying to get a follow up visit to develop a long term care plan and get my long overdue comprehensive exam that I scheduled with them in person, only to find out they never actually scheduled my visit. I will be requesting a refund for this year's payments since they won't actually see my pet or make any future accomodations either. Go literally anywhere but here. You could probably get better help from a stranger at a dog park.

Who knew a simple worm prevention and checkup would take 3 + hours? When I made an appointment, no one told me I will have to wait that long. I especially told the staff my cat has separation anxiety and I do not want her to be by herself for too long. They said they understand and recommended an afternoon slot for her. Still, it took 3 hours that’s way longer than I anticipated for worm medication. You can at least call and tell me to come later the day or to reschedule instead. Nope and they simply don’t care. Never coming here again.

I live in Georgia, and someone used my credit card info to subscribe to get vet services in San Carlos. I’ve called this business to ask them to end this subscription and stop charging my card, but Banfield has very passionately refused to end this subscription.
