How to Save Money at Banfield Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

This place is a rip off. Horrible service, horrible business model, very scam like. Don’t get fooled into their contracts. Not worth your money. Take your pet to a real vet hospital.

Update to my post that is missing. Long story, but Santa Rosa and Rohnert Park Banfield are not operating under normal business hours. I was unable to get my dogs prescription that needed to be refilled after only having it for 30 days. I called in advance to get the prescription filled before it ran out because I was told not to stop the meds cold turkey, it had to be backed off gradually. was told they would call when it comes in. Never got a call, upon calling them again I was told it didn't make the delivery. I they told me to go to Santa Rosa to have it filled. I called at 4:15 during regular business hours and SR was closed. I called back to the RP location right after and they were also closed during regular business hours. I left a voicemail to please email me the prescription so I could have it filled by another place and to please call me. No response or email. I had to find a new vet to get my 13 year old dog in for her meds. Luckily I was referred by a friend to a vet in another city who could get her iin. After taking off time from work and paying for a new patient visit (I understand the new vets need for the new patients visit) I ended up being out over $700 for a prescription that was $40. Thanks Banfield I am Soo disappointed that the company didn't provide any support for their current customers in the strange, unexplained closure. I was told by an employee of Pets Mart (where the RP Banfield is)) that Banfield is only open 2 days a week under limited hours at this time. They do not care about your pets health or well-being otherwise a responsible vet would be communicating and helping their clients. I'm taking my 5 animals elsewhere. DO NOT TRUST THEM TO HAVE YOUR PETS BEST INTEREST AT HAND. $700 FOR A $40 PRESCRIPTION.

DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY I really wish there was a zero stars option. Banfield used to be rockstars and I referred everyone to them. Now THAT Dr wood has left, they are a huge scam and can’t even see your pet. Here’s my experience. Made an appointment for a teeth cleaning and extraction in their app. (I have an old small dog who needs at lease a couple teeth pulled every time ) Show up an we were told that a teeth cleaning cannot be scheduled Online. We went ahead and just did a checkup, then scheduled the teeth cleaning for about a month out Showed up to that appointment to find out it had to be moved another month out, then was called a couple days before that appointment and was told they needed to reschedule for a couple weeks out then one more reschedule a couple weeks out Then another reschedule into January Then showed up to that appointment to find out that they could not extract any teeth while my pet was under and I would have to make another appointment at a different location, put him under again, to have the teeth extracted. Meanwhile, I am paying over 50 a month for a plan so that my pet can be seen, and yet he can never be seen. And we have 2 pets this has happened with So 1200+ a year for nothing SAVE YOUR MONEY

Don’t waste your time, apts are booked months out and they still cancel them. Plus their wellness plan is a scam, you pay monthly they can’t see your pet so they make money without performing services.
