How to Save Money at Trident Veterinary Hospital
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I want to highly recommend Dr. Ashbaugh and Trident Veterinary Hospital. I first met Dr. Ashbaugh when we had two golden retrievers 16 years ago. We had just moved to San Diego and I went to a few different places before I found Dr Ashbaugh. He is the most kind, patient, thorough, and calm vet I’ve ever met. I always had several questions about my fur babies and he would take the time to explain in detail the answers or the options I had. We went through a lot throughout their lifetime- everything from chronic ear infections, elbow dysplasia, hip dysphasia, arthritis, pain management, torn ACL, bladder infections, etc. I followed him as he moved to a few different clinics before learning that he had finally opened his own practice. I couldn’t be more excited for him, and all the clients in the area that will benefit from having his clinic in the Poway area. Trident is new, clean, and state of the art. Their prices are very affordable. Everyone who works there is so friendly, and they treat you and your pets like family. It is very hard to find a trustworthy vet you are comfortable with for your beloved pets, and I know you will be just as pleased as I am! I drive from Carmel Valley to this clinic, and I’d drive further if I had to. Thank you so much for taking such great care of our animals!

Love Trident Veterinary Hospital! Everyone there is so kind and professional - Dr. Ashbaugh is incredibly knowledgeable. They have a designated cat exam room designed to make cats feel more comfortable, and my cat loved it! There is no one I would trust more with my pets!

Dr Ashbaugh has been my veterinarian since 2007. I have followed him most places and couldn’t be more excited that he’s opened his own practice. Trident is state of the Art, modern, bright, clean, and the staff are all warm, personable and welcoming. Dr Ashbaugh has many years of experience and is so wonderful with my dogs. I have pitbulls and us pitbull owners are particular in choosing our Vet. He has always help guide me to make the right decisions. He’s shown me empathy and compassion when I sadly had to say goodbye to 2 of my dogs Sampson and Maya. I have so much trust and faith in him. You can’t go wrong with trusting your pets in his capable hands. Rocco and Bowie thank him and Maya and Sampson loved him. 🌈

I was delighted and impressed by the entire staff at Trident Veterinary Hospital. The minute I stepped in the door the receptionist was so friendly and remembered the text conversations that we had the week prior and had already had a chart with the information that I had given to her prior. Dr. Ashbaugh was amiable, knowledgeable, and professional and truly listened to me including the type of medical I prefer holistic and medical. He enlightened me with the stats and recommendations and let me decide with the medical information or read and digest. He showed me the entire operation introduced me to the rest of the back operation and let me stay with my dog as they treated her. Of course, everyone gave her a treat including a special treat she had never had. I have never had such a transparent, professional, and friendly experience at any other vet.

Trident is the only place I'll take my dog! My little dog is a rescue and very fearful, but he is completely calm with Dr. Ashbaugh and his team. The entire clinic is very new, clean and spacious, and the front desk people are always helpful. I am impressed with how Dr. Ashbaugh clearly shares information and presents alternatives. He takes his time and answers all my (many!) questions. It is obvious that Dr. Ashbaugh and the others in his office really love dogs. They have been an amazing resource for me in keeping my dog healthy physically and mentally. I can't recommend this place enough. In fact, I have three other vets just a couple miles from my home, but I drive up from San Diego because we really trust The Trident Vet team.
