How to Save Money at Animal Emergency Clinic of San Diego
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

We just brought home our beloved kitty thanks to the people at Animal Emergency Clinic of San Diego. We brought him in due to vomiting and diarrhea, and it turned out to be a kidney issue. We thought we might not get another day with him, but thanks to the technicians, he recovered really well. It’s still undetermined what the future holds for our buddy but we are grateful to get more time together. They took great care of him and are very thorough, kind and great at what they do. It’s nice to know that our pets are in good hands at this place for overnight emergencies. Thanks to everyone who works here but especially Carlos for keeping us informed, keeping our kitty healthy and doing so in a calm and kind manner. We worked with another doctor who was also very helpful. Thank you.

Had a great and overall positive experience. Plenty of staff and the actual Vet broke down what the possible scenarios that we might be looking at. We proceeded and were sent home with our pooch later that day. In our case it was a left eye issue and it was addressed and we were given meds and drops as post care. Our dog is doing great and we want to thank Animal emergency Clinic for their professionalism and efficiency.

We have had great experiences with Animal Emergency on two separate occasions for two out of three of our dogs, when they needed overnight care. If you’re a walk-in, you may have to wait awhile but that’s understandable. If it’s the middle of the night and you have nowhere else to go, they’re open. If you’re a walk-in, when you get there, they will assess your pet to see if they need to be seen ASAP or if they can wait. However, if you start with your primary vet or an urgent care and they recommend overnight care, this is definitely the place to go or at least call to see if they have the availability to provide overnight care. For both occasions, my dogs started at an urgent care, while I call ahead to ask if they would take our (my partner and I) dogs. Both times, they said yes. The first time, they said their availability might change but worked with me and left a spot open until my dog was out of surgery at an urgent care down the road. I was so so thankful for that because they were really busy and the surgeon at the urgent care took longer than the expected time I was told. On both occasions, I called when we were in the parking lot and the staff met us out at the car to get our dogs immediately. I’m emotional writing this because they took great care of our dogs during some of the scariest moments for my boyfriend and I. They will also give you prices ahead of time when you call but that’s not something to get hung up on. They will give you daily calls 1-2x’s a day and talk you through what they’re doing and why. Everyone is very professional and so kind. Their caring demeanor, genuineness, and willingness to be informative in a layman’s terms kind of way makes me feel comfortable leaving our dogs with them.

Dr. Drew was great. Brought my dog for an unknown illness where he was pooping only blood and having diarrhea and vomiting for nearly a week. They took him quickly, worked quickly, and gave me frequent updates. I didn't feel Dr. Drew was there to make money off my dogs illness, which is something I feel a lot of vets do. Didn't run any tests he saw unnecessary, and went over everything with me in good detail and allowed me to ask my questions and answered them patiently. Picked him up in the morning, he was already doing much better. The staff were all kind and helpful. I highly recommend this place if you have an emergency and don't want to feel like you're getting ripped off.

We took our cat there in 2021-2022 and received fantastic care, so we didn't think twice about going on Saturday Aug 5th 2023 with our 4 month old kitten. Took her in for an eye infection but she had become lethargic and just wasn't herself. They treated her for an upper respiratory infection which included x-rays, fluid under her skin, drugs to calm her down and help relax her plus antibiotics. We were told to bring her back on Sunday if she hadn't improved, quit eating or drinking. When we got home on Saturday she seemed to be worse, but we affiliated with the relaxing drugs she was giving. She got a drink and a bite to eat and went to sleep. She slept for 14 straight hours without eating, drinking, or using the liter box. We called Sunday afternoon to take her back and we were told that they were too busy to see her. I advised them that we were told to bring her back if she got worse. I was then transferred to a tech who said we could bring her in but we would have to wait for an open bed and there would be no financial assistance. I asked for the doctor who saw her on Saturday, but was told she was too busy but would call me back. Never received a call back. I was literally watching our 4 month kitten die...and they didn't care! My daughter called back and explained that her sister paid the bill on Saturday due to her being off work for a worker's comp injury. They told her that it wasn't their fault that we couldn't care for our cat and that we should medically surrender her since we couldn't afford medical care. We experienced no compassion, no empathy and no concern at all. I even told the doctor that the pads of her feet were very hot, which usually means a fever in a cat. She stated that her temp was only 100.5 degrees so no temp. She then returned a few minutes later chuckling and stated that she read the report wrong and she indeed had a 105 temp. Which makes me wonder, what else did she read wrong. I spent the next 30 hours giving our fur baby tuna water because that is all she would drink every 90 minutes to keep her hydrated. We then saw our vet on Monday afternoon, thank God!!
