How to Save Money at Non Profit Spay & Neuter Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

They don't answer calls, they're very slow at calling a person back, they cancelled appointments without notice or reasons "just a sorry for the inconvenience", they handle the animals a bit too rough, they say they open at 7:30am but they're really slow at opening the doors so "7:35-7:45am", one of the desk workers was very rude & kept trying to sell more package stuff to a bunch of people & she was also handling the dogs very roughly after they had just had surgery, they should stay open till 5 & not just 2 (so pick up can be done with enough time, especially when it's packed with a bunch of people trying to pick up their pets), also it's concerning that after already paying for a microchip you have to pay for services as well & they don't tell you that until they hand you all the information/paperwork (isn't it all supposed to be included after paying for the microchip)!?! They also don't really prepare you for anything you should look for after your animal had surgery. Having a dog not want to poop, pee, drink water is not good & can be dangerous. Our dog whimpered for a whole day & night, it also took 2 days before our dog wanted to eat anything, it took 3 days for our dog to finally poop & pee, she still refuses water so water is mixed into her food & the tattoo they claim is mandatory after being spayed/neutered looks horrible. Even for being an affordable spay/neuter clinic I wouldn't recommend this place.

I took me months to get an appointment. But once i recieved an appointment date and time it was like i almost won the lottery. I heard great things about this facility. The only thing i wish they would change is the process for checking in and picking up. I suggest to call a number provided. Leave your phone number and name and wait in confort of your vehicle then they will notify you in the order recieved to check you inside the facility. Then the same when picking up your pet. Waiting outside in the triple digits heat to get in line and wait was not cool. Other then that, it was still great.

I visited this clinic on Friday 6/16/23 with a friendly pregnant stray cat, her name was Clementine. She was the sweetest cat you could ever come across and while she was a stray, I still loved this cat and wanted to give her a better chance at life, so I brought her to Hope for Porterville cats to spayed. Worst decision I ever made, I must have expected too much from these people. She went downhill quickly over the weekend due to severe anemia and while we visited TWO emergency vets, in Visalia AND Fresno, it was discovered her spay was done INCORRECTLY and UNPROFESSIONALLY because she was also hemorrhaging inside. I had to make the decision to put her down! Imagine how that feels? To try and help an animal and the people you trust to help you in that process aren’t careful of their work! I’m absolutely devastated and disgusted of how bad my experience was here. What was supposed to be a really good thing, turned into a $3,000 nightmare for us and I’ll never come back or recommend Hope for Porterville Cats or any low cost spay/neuter clinic to anyone. They don’t care about quality of life, it’s an assembly line get in and get out type of situation at these places. No pain meds or suggestions, directions or regard at all for your animals.

Wonderful people! Definitely 5 stars We've fixed through this program multiple times and everytime we've been here it's a good experience. The new stray that adopted us is now fixed and vaxxed. Thank you!
