How to Save Money at Loomis Basin Equine Medical Center
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Dr. Mika & Dr. Dennis are FABULOUS! I have been a client for a few years and have full trust in both of them. I love that they will travel to me and that my horses are on the protect program. When I need more advanced care, the hospital staff is very welcoming and the facility is very nice. Thank you Loomis for all that you do for me and my horse family!

We felt misled to continue treatment with our horse who was colicking. We spent several thousand dollars more and she had to be stressed/uncomfortable overnight due to their advice. The next day after doing simple research and talking others in the veterinarian community (of which I know several vets) it came to light in our horse's particular instance it is EXTREMELY unlikely to be fixed non-surgically. The vets at loomis told us a different story and for that i feel misled to spend more money. Edited to include we already talked to Loomis Basin's staff. They assured us they have a 50% non surgical recovery rate for a right side displacement of a colon. This is not accurate at all at any other practice. Also, their vets are on some sort of commission based salary. So keep that in mind when you make decisions for your animal's care.

We had a very bad experience at this facility. We had a very sick baby goat. We had been treated at a wonderful vet in Auburn, but as his symptoms progressed we needed to go to a larger facility so that Eddie could get fluids and more advanced care. The receptionist was very nice..but after that it was not good. Although the vet seemed to know what she was doing, she had no compassion, did not explain anything to us and treated us like we were a bother that needed to go home. This was our pet and we really loved him and were very concerned about him. He died late that night. We just found out that he was euthanized..(saw it on a bill I just received)...we were not aware of this, did not get asked if we wanted to do this and did not get asked if we wanted to be there to say good bye. We got a call that night that said he died and I asked if we could pick him up later as we had to prepare a burial casket and site. The next day we got a call from our vet saying that she had to send his body off for rabies testing because he showed neurological signs. I assured her that there was no possible way that he had rabies and he had been confined in a extremely safe enclosure with no exposure to outside animals. Also, he had no bites and no real reason to suspect rabies. Also, the previous vet had diagnosed him with Listeriosis, which is a neurological disease that presents symptoms similar to rabies. We really wanted our pet back so that we could bury him and say goodbye to him. She said that there was NO way around it, but she would check on Monday and get back to me. Meanwhile on Monday morning, I called the state rabies board and the Placer County Health Department and both agencies assured me that the vet was not required to send Eddie in for rabies testing. The Placer Health Department tried to contact the doctor to tell her that, but she did not return her call. Instead, I got a call on Monday at noon from the receptionsist informing me that they had already sent Eddie to UC Davis and if I wanted to cremate him, I could call and number for payment. We did not want to cremate because it goes against our philosophies..but had no choice at this point...because we wanted some part of our baby pet back. The doctor never called me back. I also asked the receptionist how this was being paid for and she said she would call me back...she never did. Since, our goat was being destroyed anyways, I wanted to get a necropsy, to try to save our second goat but we no longer had control over his body..I called UC Davis and they said the vet had to order this...The receptionist said once again someone would call me back...and no one did. When I called UC Davis on Wed to get results, they said there was no necropsy done and they did not get the body until Tuesday...which is different information than what was given to me on Monday by Loomis Basin. We did get the ashes back eventually and the rabies results back..and just as I suspected, Eddie did not have rabies. I am extremely disappointed with the lack of communication and the miscommunication and the lack of caring about our rights to our goat and our wishes. I will never go back to Loomis Basin and I hope goat owners and not go here either. Also...we just got the bill...they euthanized him and charged us for this, yet did not ask us if we wanted to do this or tell us they even did it. They charged us for the necropsy that was not done and charged us for the rabies test that they said they were going to pay for. I can not be more disappoionted and saddened by this facility and will NEVER go anywhere near there again.

This place has saved me 4 times! Best service ever! Super professional with accurate radiograph analysis. I have done 4 PPE with them or had them to review my PPE from other vets and they found OCD in all 4 horses While the other vets didn’t catch it. I can’t thank doctor Coral White enough. She’s an amazing human being. She has gone above and beyond to help us and from bottom of my heart I wish her nothing but only good things. I had a very tight deadline with a seller and I was under pressure and stress to pay off the horse fully in one hour and she assisted me last second and helped us to get the radiographs reviewed and find the OCD. Thank you so much doctor Coral White for being amazing. I highly recommend this place for PPE and if you could have doctor White, you would be the winner.

Loomis Basin is the most amazing clinic/surgery center that I have ever been to. They service customers up to (and sometimes over) a 2 hour radius away from the main hospital making veterinary care available for everyone 24/7 no matter how far in the boonies you live. All of the vets there are some of the most caring and knowledgeable people that I have ever worked with. Their facility is clean and beautiful and the nicest equine clinic I have ever seen. They provide the upmost care and I recommend them to everyone!
