How to Save Money at Exotic Animal Veterinary Center

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

There are not enough words to say...THANK YOU for everything they do and have done for our bunny. Dr. Kanfer is hands down the best rabbit doctor I've ever come across. She is kind, prompt, very explanatory, understanding and goes beyond just being a normal doctor/vet she along with everyone on her team truly CARE about rabbits. She also wears a bunny necklace which we thought was the sweetest detail. Dr. Kanfer went as far as caring for our bunny who went into GI Stasis and took him for overnight care to her home with frequent updates during late hours when the emergency vet wouldn't. We almost lost our bunny but they did everything they could to communicate and treat him with the best level of care. We are so grateful and appreciate all the time we get to have with our bunny, he is binkying around our living room as I write this. They also have offered us resources the emergency care bill being high. We can not thank them enough for the love and care they've provided for our bunny and HIGHLY recommended this vet to any and all rabbit/exotic pet owners.

This is best veterinary clinic to get your exoctic pets checked out at! They have rabbit-savvy vets in this clinic which is the reason I brought my little boy Ignacio. At the time I was a kid with no money but I knew I had to bring my little Ignacio here when I finally had the money for it and I'm so glad I did because you're definitely guaranteed the best care for your rabbits at this clinic. I am very satisfied with the service I received and so is Ignacio. I brought in my Ignacio for his first wellness exam in over 2 years and patiently waited in the lobby for a staff member to pick him up as this clinic is still following their COVID-19 protocol. Since the clinic is still under protocol you will have to wait in either the lobby or in your car and wait to receive a call from the clinic for your pet's report and for when your pet is ready to be sent home, they will also call you for other additional services and go over the costs if you decide to add any additional services for your pet's wellness exam such as medication, blood work, vaccines, etc. Through the phone we went over about Ignacio's wellness exam, blood work that was recommended , a vaccine that was recommended, some medication that was recommended to get sent home with if Ignacio got the vaccine, and the overall cost of the visit. I agreed to receive the additional services they recommended for my rabbit and in total our visit took about 2 hours. They sent me copies to my email of what we discussed during the visit and the costs. When I received my Ignacio back he seemed to be stress free unlike with his previous vet where he would be stressed out when I got him back so I'm very positive and believe that these vets were patient with Ignacio and gave Ignacio their best care! I will definitely be bringing my Ignacio back for his yearly wellness exams and vaccine as I am very happy with the service I received! 🐰🩷

Just.. wow. I’m pretty sure that my cockatiel just received better healthcare than I’ve ever received! Dr. Wills and the rest of the staff were so nice, accommodating and knowledgeable. I could not have fathomed how much I would’ve learned about literally everything regarding my cockatiel as well as how thoroughly she would’ve been examined. They have private rooms and incubators, it’s the classiest veterinary center and they were looking after my cockatiel for over 3 hours! The only drawback was that the amount of time this would take was not communicated properly (we were initially told this was supposed to be a 30 min to 1 hour visit) and the cost which was a lot! I probably would not come here often but it was worth an initial checkup and all the knowledge we received.

I love it. They took in my pet rat Sammy as a walk-in because there was a no-show. I'm so thankful for them because I had an appointment until 2 week out. And this was an emergency for my baby. They saw her, they checked her, and they loved her, and of course, my Sammy was all into it. lol, we started her medication, and hopefully, we'll be seeing some improvements soon. The Dr was so nice and helpful, explained what options we had and what she had. The nurse was so nice as well. We've been here before with my other rats, and we've always had a great experience when we go. They treat our pets like they were family. I love that.

Extremely disappointed with their service. They suggested I pay for expensive lab testing for which the results were received about 10 days later. They knew it was critical that those results were received right away to insure the proper medication was prescribed. I called every day for the results to no avail. They knew time was of the essence. Now, that the results have been received nobody calls me back or answers my calls. I finally got through when I called from a different number and nobody was available to speak with me, and still no call back from a vet, tech or office manager. As a result my beloved pet is now dead and I am down $1,000 and I still don’t know what caused it. Extremely disappointed and will not recommend this place to anyone. As a result of their negligence my beautiful pet is dead.
