How to Save Money at PETS Hospital
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Our cat Joey had to be euthanized recently and the staff was wonderful! Special thanks to Laura and Kim and Dr. Bradley. The room we were in was like a living room with soft lighting. One thing that helped us the most was the birds sounds they have playing in the background! I'm sure it helped Joey but it was very meditative and calmed my anxiety. After his IV, he was on soft pillows and blankets while we spent time saying goodbye. A few days later we received a lovely sympathy card and some sweet little cards with Joey's paw print on them. I also want to thank Dr. Brown who saw Joey back in October and was very kind--

Money hungry Veterinary Hospital. They wanted to do all these tests for something I googled and figured out what it was. We told them we had to take our daughter to the ER and that we would contact them when we got out. While my dog was in their care, my dog was not responsive and they asked to do CPR, which I gave them permission to continue. They called me back about five minutes later saying that they couldn’t bring my dog back. After driving their to see my dog they charged me over $1000, $500 was for CPR that they were not successful in. After getting home they continued to call and asked for the rest of the payment. This place is more worried about their money and payment over taking care your pet. I believed they left our pet in a cage and let her die until we had the payment. When we did pay, all of a sudden she was unresponsive. I’ve been here a few times and it’s the same thing, they try to run as many tests as possible to bump up the bill and it’s a simple diagnoses. Unless you absolutely need to go here, I would go to the primary Vet or Arroyo Grande instead of this place. The reason why we didn’t go to ours was because all the Doctors had Covid. I don’t know how anyone has had a good experience here.

I was dissatisfied with the service provided, although the staff was understanding regarding the unfortunate situation. My dog had an unexpected health scare, necessitating an emergency visit. He displayed disorientation, blood in his stool, and other concerning symptoms. It was my first time seeking animal care without an appointment. However, the staff insisted on receiving the payment ranging from $1,000- 2,000 before attending to my dog's needs. While money was not the primary concern, it was disheartening that the establishment prioritized payment over the immediate care my dog required. Furthermore, I was given overpriced medication that I could have easily purchased from a local store or Walmart.

I can't think of a way to actually express my gratitude to PETS Hospital. Everyone there - from receptionists to techs to doctors - were incredibly kind, compassionate, and great at communication. And it should be noted that I could have taken my cat to an urgent care/ER closer to us in SLO, but the drive to Santa Maria was well worth it. Specific shouts outs to Connie, Dr. Brown, Dr. Terhaar, Erin, Dr. Funk, and Jessica. For background, on the evening of Dec 30th, PETS Hospital saw my 8-month-old kitten who swallowed nearly 6 inches of a wire ribbon from a Christmas gift (without me even knowing!). We were referred to PETS by a SLO vet, and I'm so happy for that referral. I trust PETS Hospital entirely and even when I was a scared kitten mama they let me come and visit with our kitten before his surgery (just note that you should call ahead to request this as sometimes they are super busy and cannot accommodate). In terms of pricing, I've never had a cat need to have their intestines opened to have a foreign object removed, so I don't know what the "typical" cost is. But they do provide you with a low end and a high end cost estimate, and the surgery and our cat's overnight stays actually ended up being closer to the low end estimate. They also provided a no-cost service to "fix" our kitten's internal sutures the day after his surgery. Miscellaneous things to note: they have free snacks and beverages, a very clean bathroom, and the rooms have free Hulu TV. Overall, I can't recommend them highly enough.
