How to Save Money at Oakdale Veterinary Group
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Dr. Trathan and the team at Oakdale Veterinary Group really helped my 8 yo heeler who tore his CCL. We have seen a dramatic increase in his mobility and in his overall quality of life. Dr. Trathan explained to us in great detail about his injury through x-rays and models. The estimate included all of the surgery, medications, 3 follow up appointments, and 3 or 4 sets of x-ray photos. They even gave us a cute tote with all of his meds post op. We traveled 2.5 hours from the bay area to take our dog here and it was well worth it. We saved at minimum $2k by traveling and I believe we received more attention and better care than we would have elsewhere. The surgery has been so worth it. I think we will get another 8 years out of our dog.

Dr Kelsey Willis has been amazing both times I've been here, as well as all the vet techs. They made the horrible and painful experience of putting our cat down, just a tiny bit easier with their kindness. I'm very grateful for them.

10 stars for Dr. Ned Trathan and OVG! I worked as an Assistant at two Vet clinics, and for 10 years as a Volunteer, managed the medical care for a busy Dog Rescue. So I speak from experience with different Vets and clinics all over the Bay Area, and different medical issues for (literally) hundreds of dogs. Needless to say, I have high standards when it comes to medical care for my own (5) Furbabies. Dr. Ned was recommended to me by another experienced Rescue friend 3 or 4 years ago, for CCL surgery for my Boxer Mike, who was 8 years old at the time. Dr. Ned also found, diagnosed and treated Mike for heart arrhythmia he discovered in his surgery pre-op. After taking him to a Specialist and another $5K to monitor his heart for 24 hours, the Cardiologist put Mike back on the same medication and dosage that Dr. Ned originally prescribed for him. Now 3 years later, after two successful CCL surgeries, Mike is healthy and active, with no sign or symptoms of heart or knee issues. Needless to say, Dr. Ned is Mike's PCP! Dr. Ned also performed successful Medial Patella Luxation on both knees for my 12 year old heart-Chihuahua, Punkinhead Noodlebug in November. She just had her 12 week check, both legs are a success and she's back to zooming around! I am so grateful to Dr. Ned and the entire OVG staff. Their thorough, detailed and thoughtful care for their patients, and responsiveness, availability and realistic preparation for anxious Fur-parents, really helped to keep Mike, Punkinhead and ME comfortable throughout all successful surgeries and recoveries. I can't recommend Dr. Ned and all of OVG highly enough!

Stop looking this is the vet you want! I have been going to a vet in Sonora for the past five years, every time I go I feel like I wait longer than expected on a scheduled visit and am bothering the Staff/Drs. This place is completely different! I was routed here by my vet was not staffed and my poor fur baby, Birch, collapsed in my yard and couldn't move. They were nothing but accommodating and supportive. Rushed out to my car and grabbed her and started her workup right away. The Doctors and staff helped me through everything and were very open about what was happening which was very appreciated in a very scary moment. They even helped me set up an emergency appointment at UC Davis later that afternoon. Please offer my deepest gratitude to Dr. Kelsey Willis and everyone that assisted her that day as they were nothing but amazing during a very hard moment in my life. They truly provided me the support i needed on one of the hardest days I have ever had to go through. All my future pets will go here.

Brought our large Tabby twice to their old property up the hill for urgent care, couldn't ger in to regular vet. Had to check in by phone and wait in car til tech came and discussed issue(s), pet history, etc. Then doctor came out and talked about what she recommended. Both tech and vet were very pleasant and results were successful! We were also surprised but happy that the charges weren't as outrageous as our regular local vet. Fast forward to June 2023, Tabby showing UTI signs, no problem making appointment, and I'd known they moved to a new office. And what a beautiful fancy schmancy place! Before we walked in we wondered if we'd have to help pay for this new place by means of increased prices. Mind you, no more waiting in the car, there's a huge waiting area with a flat screen, bathrooms resemble a fancy restaurant, and their equipment....seems top of the line, still smell brand new! The staff was still great, our tech, Mary, was the best! The base visit price remained the same, and the additional charges appear reasonable, hopeful for good results! We love OVG.
