How to Save Money at Nipomo Dog & Cat Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I’ve taken my 4 year old pup to these folks since she was 13 weeks old. She receives loving and conscientious care from Dr. Devault ~ and I receive the same from the phenomenal front desk staff!!! It’s rare these days to get such a combination of efficiency and warmth. From Vet Tech’s to schedulers - everyone has been friendly and helpful, and every experience has been a positive one. I was even happily surprised to discover after a miner surgery that the cost was LESS than initially quoted, and believe their prices for services are reasonable and very competitive with other practices in the county. Also, importantly, our doctor is kind, down-to-earth, honest, and conservative in her treatment approach. I trust her and rely upon her input and explanations. She seems to take my pup’s well-being as much to heart as I do! I have enthusiastically recommended Dr. Devault and Nipomo Cat & Dog for years, and will continue to do so. I wholeheartedly endorse them to anyone considering options.

We've been using Nipomo Dog & Cat Hospital for the past 6 years and they have provided excellent care for our 2 elderly cats and dog. Dr. DeVault, Medical Director, is our current Veterinarian and she is a pleasure to work with, always looking for the simplest solution and ways to minimize the cost of any treatment. The front office, medical technicians and rest of the team are also very good, friendly and compassionate. And when we need them the most they always try and fit us in.

Update: I was very sad the day I found out that Dr. Stamp was gone. She was always so caring and compassionate. I brought in one of my critters and met with one of the new veterinarians, and it just wasn't the same. I tried out a couple of competing vets. Something was just missing. I made an appointment back at ND&CH for Frank, the Yorkie in my photos. He was having some respiratory and allergy issues. The very second that Dr. Mcveigh introduced herself, I felt like everything was alright. She had such a calming effect. A few weeks later, on trip back from Idaho, Frank started getting really sick. We got home around 11 pm, and we went to Arroyo Grande emergency hospital. They wanted to do a few procedures, but I really wanted to bring him to Doc Mcveigh. She met with us early the next day and did some tests on Frank. She told us that we could do some things, but she was honest with us and explained that it would only prolong the suffering. We made the painful decision to put him out of his misery. That's where she switched from Dr. Mcveigh to Sheri Mcveigh, concerned pet owner. She was with us through the whole process, crying along with us. She gave us one of Frank's pawprints to take home. We brought Frank home with us in a beautiful little casket they prepared for us. A couple of weeks later, I received a hand-written note expressing her condolences I just can't say enough good about Sheri. And I finally met someone who loves animals as much or more than I do. Original review: From the on-time appointments and front-desk cheerful faces to the excellent and caring veterinarians, this is where we've taken all of animals for many years. We've been there for anything from itchy butts to major surgery and wouldn't trust our four-legged children to anybody else.

My review is not based on the doctor because I did not get that far but it’s more to inform doctors of their front staff as I would want to know if I was running a business. I am moving to the area and Seeking new vets for my dog who has epilepsy. Treatment currently is medication and acupuncture. I called Nipomo Dog & Cat Hospital. Online it says they offer acupuncture. As soon as the phone is answered no one greats me or tells me they are putting me on hold…they instantly just do. I thought, that’s weird but wasn’t a big deal. The front desk girl picks up the phone after some time and I asked about cost of acupuncture (initial visit and follow up visits) and explained my dogs current tx. She said “we don’t really do that here so I don’t know that the doctor will do acupuncture but the initial appointment would be $82.50 if you want see. I said “why would I make an appointment if you’re telling me you don’t really do that here”. She said “yeah it’s up to the doctor and I can’t give you pricing for treatment”. I responded “clearly this is not a fit, and said thank you.” This is more to inform staff if you offer these services to clarify with your front desk. When I thought I was moving to SLO they were able to provide me clear information on initial and follow up for acupuncture and if they didn’t offer service they new with certainty.

Enjoyed the pet and human friendly staff. Took my cats to get neutered and spayed for $20 each. This is possible due to donations to help with this cause. Such a great opportunity!
