How to Save Money at Newport Animal Hospital
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Dr. Heathcock was remarkably patient and kind to our puppy Scout on her first visit. All the staff were wonderful and caring. Thanks to the Newport Animal Hospital for everything!

I couldn't select a good rating because the Vets and staff are amazing but the groomer was price gouging and not utilizing best business practices. I will go here for veterinary services but not grooming. First the compliment. We go to Dr. Mendez who is so wonderful as are the front and back office staff! We will continue to come here for the most important care of our animals which is healthcare. However, our experience with the groomer and office manager was interesting at best...The groomer may be good at grooming (I don't know because my dog was shaved) but she was up-charging beyond grooming standards best practices. Hear me out...I had brushed the matts out for the groomer prior to coming. (Groomer agreed his tail and ears were not matted) but she would be still charging a dematting fee which I eventually agreed to even though my dogs hair is like cotton and pulls apart easily and not painfully. I was willing to pay. Then she change her mind -she wanted to shave him down - so disappointingly I agreed with her that she could shave my baby down. And... Here is where the problem began...Groomer (Kim) stated she will still be charging me a dematting fee!! What?!?!? I have had a Bichon Frise for 8 years. Never have I ever been charged a dematting fees with a shave down. I was confused by her extra charge and I called 5 groomers which all stated there is NO dematting fees for shaving a dog down. The decision to shave a dog down is exactly NOT to be dealing with any matts on the dog! The groomers I contacted during my inquiry stated it is not a business practice in the grooming industry to charge dematting fees with a shave! That it just didn't make any sense. I called the office and wanted to take to them about my findings. I already knew it was weird anyway. The front office was AMAZING how they handled everything. but they couldn't do anything because the groomer sets her own pricing and they went to inquire and she couldn't take off the dematting fee. I understood and thanked them for their kindness. So at this point I asked for the office manager to contact me. She is a technician and not a groomer but talked to me none-the-less and stood behind her groomer even though I explained this is not a good or reasonable business practice. I asked her as an office manager to do her own research as the groomer works under their roof and it reflects on their business practices which isn't equivalent to the excellent service my animals receive by their other staff and vets. After expressing these things -the office manager said the groomer (who stood her ground 3 different times) agreed to remove the charge and the office manager gave me the lecture of we will do it this time but in the future...they also acted as though it was a trivial matter which was why the groomer removed the charge and acted as though they were doing me a favor. Business practices are never trivial. I was actually doing them a favor by bringing it to their attention. I guess they miss the entire point. Just FYI - if you shave a dog down there should be no dematting charge as there is nothing to de-matt. It's simply not the standard nor is it best business practice in the industry. Upon my request/The office manager began to say she would. bring it up the Medical Directors to review. Shame on the groomer and the office manager for acting like they did me a favor by removing the dematting charge and lecturing me about the future. My dog was left with irregular long pieces of hair and a weird goatee but otherwise looked good for a shave. I still tipped the groomer because I have good business practices. I will be following up with the Medical Directors myself. Hopefully they'll set some sort of best business practices with their groomer's. If they don't feel this is important it will be a reflection on the business and I would question their business practices in pricing across the board. Matter should have been resolved very quickly but dragged on all day. Groomer became rude and office manager became sarcastic in the end.

The best vet I have ever had. They get your pet in. They don't try to get you for unnecessary things. My dogs are happy there. The staff is nice.

The communication between receptionists an doctors are very bad! Takes weeks to get refill for medication. I cannot rely on them.
