How to Save Money at Vetco Total Care Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

We have tried a few Vets in the area. Once we met Dr. Esmail, we knew we were in the right place. She knows our Labrador now and is patient with Sierra’s boisterous personality. She explains things well to us and is always such a kind & supportive doctor.

Less than a year ago we signed up for a vital care membership with Vetco and we payed for a year up front. The membership included that there would be no fee for exams. So basically, when you go in to get your pet looked at, there was no fee. All you had to cover was the cost of medication and any additional services. My vital care membership expires in December 2024, but today when my dog went to her appointment, they said I would have to pay for the visit. I told them that I already paid for this visit because I am a vital care member and I already paid for a year in advance. They told us that they change their policy in August and that now you have to pay for the exam. I explained to them that this is not right, that they are robbing me of my money because I already paid, But they did not care they just kept informing me of their new policy and how it has changed. How can Vetco offer a membership where you can pay a year in advance and you sign off on it then go ahead and charge you again for something that you already paid for just because they wanted to change their policy? So basically, Vetco is robbing their clients who paid for this yearly membership and now they are expecting us to pay them more when we go in and bring our pets in for an exam after we have already paid. Also, they have terrible billing procedures. Our dog was seen in August 2024 for a urinary track infection. There were tests ordered that we paid for and then proceeded to pass them on to our insurance company. Then our insurance company reached out to them multiple times from August until now October 2024, and they still have not reached back to our insurance with the information that they needed. So we had to go back to Vetco and they said that they never got an email from our insurance company even though we have proof of multiple emails being sent out to Vetco . . Once again, this proves that Vetco is a terrible place to send your pets, and I would definitely not recommend going to them. I will never have my pet go to a Vetco again. Just plain terrible service and management. For the record, I gave them no stars with this review, but it would not let me, so I had to give them one star.

Doesn’t matter if you confirm 3 times prior to your appointment, be ready to have it cancelled for “an emergency.” I was called the day before the appointment and was asked to reschedule to noon. We selected this appointment time for early morning for a reason based on our plans and the fact that we are taking our dog to boarding on Sunday. When told no, that we would like to keep the appointment, we were then told that we needed a “wellness check,” for any vaccinations. No where on the website does it state this, or was told prior to booking the appointment online. At this point, I felt like they just wanted us to move the appointment for their convenience. I told the receptionist to keep the appointment (again confirming) to then receive a voicemail that they were canceling my appointment. I called back to keep it, however now I’m being told that there was an “emergency” and all appointments were cleared…. How convenient. Also why not just say that instead of asking if we want to reschedule. We were planning on getting a vet plan for our dog with VETCO, not anymore. Huge red flag, they clearly don’t care about respecting your time or the fact that you’ve confirmed the appointment to keep it.

You know what life is an experiment.... My cat Sass and I have been to ---- and back! And I love this guy. But I actually see some light at the end of this tunnel. They listened to me they heard me. Im tired, Sass is tired I just want him to be calm poor guy I feel so bad for what these other Vet's have put him and I through. They made me feel calm so that is a start. But again he was too stressed to do the test. We were there too long in my eyes. I am hopeful for the futrure that some of these Vet's will start to do house calls because for some pet's going to the VET is super stressful for all pet's really. And the sooner people start to realize this the better off everyone would be. Just a thought. I do like the personality of the doctor and the nurse tech. And hope something works for this kid. He is normlally super sweet and not sure what has happened but his Micro Biome is way off and I hope someone can help me fix that and not just cover it up! So far so good here. But only time will tell. Thank so much have a great day! :)
