How to Save Money at Muir Oaks Veterinary Hospital
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

My son's beloved greyhound, April, was hours away from passing (or so it appeared to me). Her usually slim belly was bulging out both sides with what turned out to be an 8.25 lb massive tumor that took up 90% of her abdominal cavity. She wasn't eating, since her stomach was getting squished. Her usual high-spirited, fun-loving, happy self could barely move. Her muscular legs looked slack. She had lost so much weight, her bones were sticking out. The mass had grown within weeks! Thank God for Drs. Herder and Jimison and their staff. As April's grandmum, I got to know them during pre- and post-surgery visits. The grass doesn't grow under anyone's feet there. They run a brisk business, are well organized, professional, tech-savvy, and, most of all, friendly, kind, and love all God's creatures that walk or are carried in. April sensed that and did not hesitate to go in. She loves Jonathan (who is in training to be a vet). I am forgetting the names of all the wonderful staff I met there, but am grateful for every one! Muir Oaks is conveniently located around the corner and up a short hill from highway 4. It's a shining oasis, with a wide driveway and parking spots and a patch of lawn in front for dogs to sniff and do their business. The building and lobby are beautifully decorated, gorgeous, comfortable, clean, and spacious, with high ceilings and plenty of light from several windows. It was a miracle that someone cancelled and April was able to have surgery the day after Dr. Jimison and their staff spent the day saving a pup's life. One of their staff had tears in her eyes as she described their efforts. My son and I learned later that he had given up his vacation for April. I am attaching some of my favorite photos but will spare you the bloody one of the massive tumor Drs. Herder and Jimison removed during a 6-hour operation (posted on their Instagram account -- @muiroaksveterinaryhospital). As someone with very high standards, I usually do a great deal of research before choosing a service provider that I think will meet my needs. This decision was my son's call, since April is his pup. Muir Oaks exceeded my expectations, with flying colors! I highly recommend them. They saved her life!

We take our dog for boarding here. Our girl adores Muir Oaks staff and care. If I had any criticism it would be that the rates jumped recently. However, it's well worth knowing she's well cared for. Thanks Muir Oaks!

I couldn't be more pleased with the staff at Muir Oaks. I was able to get my injured cat in the same day I called. The front desk staff was very friendly and accommodating. They immediately called me back to let me know they could get my cat it to be seen. The doctor was fantastic and explained everything she was going to do to treat the wound. They are sympathetic and very kind during these stressful pet situations. Highly recommend!

I can't say enough good things about Dr. Herder-Jimison! She takes such wonderful care of our rescue, Cornbread, and helps ease his anxiety with each visit. Getting him current on his vaccinations and relieving minor issues leftover from his days at the shelter has been amazing, and he's finally looking/acting like the healthy young dog he's supposed to be. Love Muir Oaks! Very thankful for a local vet hospital that cares for their patients like their own.
