How to Save Money at Veterinary Skin & Ear

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Gwen and I are so happy to have Dr. Richmond in our lives! Before we found him and as a new rescue, she was in very rough shape with bald patches all over her body from scratching due to severe allergies. It took a while to determine exactly what her allergens were to get her on autoimmunity treatment, which has increased her quality of life. Gwen went from rags to riches with the ultimate LA makeover and now has gorgeous white spotted fur. If your fur baby has allergies, I can’t recommend Dr. Richmond enough!

Dr. Boyd was Wonderful. Very engaging with our dog as well as with me. She explained what she saw, offered options for treatment, and further options if the initial treatment plan is unsuccessful. Very thorough and professional. Also her treatment team was very pleasant and professional. Communication before and during the appointment was on point.

I really appreciated the thorough exam my dog received and the amount of time spent with the vet. I felt she was truly getting to know him and his issues to make a "big picture" plan for his health going forward. She made us both feel relaxed and gave him a thorough, unhurried exam.

I brought my dog here hoping they would be able to give my dog the surgery she needed for her inner ear. I explained everything to the nurses on the phone and the severity of the issue. I brought the dog in for an initial diagnosis (standard) $225 charge just for this. The people were very knowledgeable, but not focusing on the main reason I brought the dog in. They eventually set up and appointment for my dog 3 weeks later to have the surgery. We waited so long for this appointment then the day before we are informed by the vet that they are unable to perform this surgery and we need to go elsewhere. I politely asked for my $225 initial fee back because now I have to bring her elsewhere and they will also be charging a $225 fee just to see my dog for that initial appointment. Ultimately they did NOT give me my money back, which is part of the reason I am leaving my review now. I was very clear in the beginning about what my dog needed when she went to visit this vet, they seemed confident they could perform the service so I brought my dog to them. When it came down to doing the procedure they didn’t feel comfortable and made me wait over 3 weeks to tell me they can’t do it when my dogs issue is a big deal. Now I’m at square one again trying to get my dog seen after waiting a whole month wasting time and money with you. Ultimately not happy with my experience here as I think it could have be handled better or in a more timely manner. Very unprofessional in my eyes. Reply: all of the paper work was given to the vet the day of the initial appointment. I had an appointment 3 weeks from this day and I was called 1 days before canceling the surgery.

This was the first time coming into Veterinary skin & ear - You were one of the recommendations from VCA Manhattan Beach - I was given 3 other options. I'm so happy I chose this one because of the care I received and all the helpful information. I felt 100% comfortable with this visit, and I know for a fact my fur baby will be taken care of here! I felt the support and care for every single concern I had for my dog!
