How to Save Money at MASH Outpatient

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Brought my senior dog to see a Cardiologist at MASH. Dr. Smith and her tech team are amazing! Everyone is so nice and caring. They take care of my little senior girl, Daisy, so well! The place is super clean and well put together. Highly recommend this place for outpatient concerns! Loved that Dr. Smith gives detailed notes about our visit and her findings. She is so patient, she explained everything I needed to know and answered all of my concerns without feeling rushed. They definitely take their time for 1 on 1 meetings. Thank you to Erica for answering my questions and having amazing customer service! Daisy and I are thankful for the cardiology team at MASH Outpatient.

No one wants to hear that their pet needs a major procedure done. My dog luna needed extensive periodontic surgery. I was terrified. They texted me during surgery to let me know she was doing great while under. Then when she was finished. I wish I didn't need their services, but I'm glad they were there. It is an expensive place, no doubt, but my dog is worth it. I'm glad I chose them after doing research.

Dr. Bisignano and the staff at MASH are extremely communicative, caring, and understanding when it comes to working with my anxious dog (and her anxious dad). My pup has been dealing with chronic GI issues for years, to the point that eating food was frequently difficult due to pain. She absolutely HATED having to eat, and meal time became stressful for both of us. Every test I could get done at a regular vet had been exhausted (ultrasound, labs, food trials), and I couldn't afford specialty care to get her a proper diagnosis of IBD. Eventually I saved up for a while and was able to bring her here, and the treatment she's gotten from Dr. Bisignano since February has been life changing. The severe inflammation to her intestines was starting to look like it could grow into something worse, but it's now being controlled with the right medication. My dog not only stopped losing weight, but has finally been able to reach a healthy weight & is excited to eat for the first time in her life (which has caused some fun new issues for our cat, whose food is now of interest). I can't say enough how grateful I am for the team at MASH!

Except for the parking situation (which is just LA stressful since it's only on the street) we have liked our experiences with MASH. We have gone multiple times to Dr. Bianci when our in home vet needs us to see an internist and recently we went to their cardiology group. We even got into the cardiologist within a few days of calling but maybe we got lucky.

Beyond leaving my cat in a far worse state, permanently, after many thousands of dollars in their care, I've just learned that he had the blood levels of stage 2 kidney disease when MASH did bloodwork on him--and they never said a word. They told me all his blood tests were completely fine. As other reviewers have mentioned, all this hospital wants is your money. When it was clear that my pet had a food allergy, they insisted it was an environmental one so they could sell me on a multi-hundred dollar monthly medication. I'd go to absolutely any other emergency care or specialist over ever visiting MASH again.
