How to Save Money at Emerald Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I have had nothing but good experiences at Emerald. They are very kind and caring towards your pets. I have a dramatic little old cat and they have been very patient with her, even though she can be quite violent during visits. My two younger cats also were treated very gently and calmly, they are younger so a lot of things are still quite new for them so the car ride there was extremely stressful for them but the calm energy at Emerald calmed them down and made them feel comfortable and they were completely relaxed the car ride back home! Dr. Agahi is an expert and skilled at communicating what is going on with your pet, options, etc. I feel very comfortable coming here and knowing that my babies are in good hands. Emerald also does an AMAZING job at providing so many additional resources for owners. They have an online pharmacy available which is super convenient. There is a specialty surgeon that works with them to cover more complicated surgeries instead of having to be referred out, you can schedule with them which is great! The online portal is also very user friendly. Highly recommend!

I never leave negative reviews but I feel like this is a must. I called in a couple days ago for a refill for my dog's prescription. The rude techs told me they don't know when it will be ready, and said "we'll get to it when we can". I did not hear back. I called again today and was told that the doctor will call me back. Well, I just got off the phone with her and she had no intention of talking about my dog's refill, but only about the negative review my husband had left when we visited for an emergency. She said that "it breaks the relationship" and chose not to fill the Rx. Instead of trying to apologize and remedy the situation her business created on our last visit that led to a poor review, she decided to make it exponentially worse. I told her that I would also be leaving a negative review, so here it is. On the day of the emergency we brought our dog in because he woke up shivering and paralyzed from acute pain. The techs were nonchalant despite my tears. I finally got a tech who was nice enough to come out and take a look at our dog. We were then presented a bill of $150 as their "emergency fee" as we still sat in the car waiting. We were told that it can be anywhere between 1-4 hours. We did not want to sit in the car that long with our dog in obvious distress so we left and went back to our old vet who saw us right away and did not charge an emergency fee (Dr. Revel at West Hollywood Animal Hospital, who I highly recommend and all the staff there are always so nice and professional). Emerald has been nothing but terrible experiences for us. Avoid, avoid, AVOID unless you like to pay fees on top of fees while your pets receive services from people who clearly do not care. This is the only place I know that charges a $40 tech fee each visit on top of the annual fee. The only reason we called for the Rx in the first place is because we had just paid the annual fee a few months ago. We only decided to give Emerald a try because it was closer to our home. Huge mistake. We will be happily going back to West Hollywood Animal hosptial, even though it's out of our way, for vet visits now. I would rather lose our annual fee at Emerald than set foot there again. I understand they're running a business, but Emerald is just a straight up money grab. The least they can do is fake the empathy.

Avoid this place at all costs. We switched over from our beloved West Hollywood animal hospital because this was much closer to our house. Their service has been nothing but awful in that time. Their fees are exorbitant, and inflate each year. In true emergencies they won't see your dog unless you pay a huge fee upfront, then they won't even tell you what time you'll be seen. After 1.5 years, we will be more than happy to drive further away to seek vet care. Just an awful money grabbing company without any empathy for your pets.

It was a wonderful experience. They really have the touch. They didn't try to up treatments or skimp on them either. They were sweet to us too

We wanted to try a new vet so we gave this place a try. We are always shaken with vet practice. It is so sad that they treat every other pets like a new business, make you feel like you are a bad parent, and recommend laundry list of treatment like you are taking your car for service. Emerald animal hospital absolutely made us feel this way. Our golden was 6.5 years when we took him for ear inspection because he gets ear infection every summer from playing in water. We used to take him to our regular vet every few months to get his ear cleaned and he was given Topical steroids with heavy chemical and we paid $3-400 every visit. More than money we were concerned about what we were putting in our pup's body. So we started doing home remedy which really works but when it's too bad before we catch it we take him to vet. At this place vet Anahita saw our pup for less tha a min. He was due for bath so he was itching. Then within that moment she decided my dog had life long allergy. When I told her he is due for bath and he wasn't even itching bad she made me feel like I wasn't caring for my dog. Then she recommended laundry list of treatment costing $1200 after 1 min of examination. Mind you we went just for ear examination and she also put my dog under Sr. List and added more items to the recommend list of treatment. Then they wanted to give an allergy shot to him for $150ish the same day to stop him from itching. We declined everything and asked them to clean his ear, do ear exam, and specifically told them that my dog gets irritated ⁷with malacetic and that's exactly what they prescribed. We paid about $400 and asked them if they can prescribe the antibiotic they used for his ears. Of course they declined cuz they can charge about $100ish for a drop. They asked us to bring him back im 2 weeks for another check up and to rack up another $400! We decided not to take him. After 2 weeks of anti biotic period we gave him bath and continued our home remedy ear cleaning. In a week or so he stopped scratching at all and his infection was gone. It's been about a year. He's only had ear infection once after beach visit that we were able to cure with non chemical home remedy and the life long allergy vet Anahita detected looking at him for few seconds also doesn't exist.
