How to Save Money at Woodside Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

My older cat would have to be sedated at another veterinary office. But here no problem. In fact my other female cat loves the Vet, she tried to kiss her. And there prices are so much more reasonable.

8/2023 My 9 year old Maltipoo had a lump. Took us one week to see Vet. Dr says it’s a harmless cyst, common among the breed. So relieved. This is a no nonsense doctor doing good medicine, for reasonable fees. This place doesn’t appear to be gouging people for money like so many others do. I also asked her if my dogs needed dental, she examined both 9 year olds teeth and said they were fine. She’s my new East County Vet. No frills office, just good veterinarian.

09/08/23 First time ever bring my baby Julie here since getting her. Absolutely loved it. I brought her in for dental surgery & I honestly felt so good leaving her. I was so worried about everything considering she is an older dog that we know nothing about. The amazing staff at Woodside Animal Hospital really made a scary time a much easier time to pass. Also the price was way cheaper than I was quoted at a different vet. The price was actually cheaper than the rough estimate that I received over the phone a week earlier when I made the appointment. My baby julie is now at home recovering well & i couldnt be happier about everything. It's safe to say I have officially found a vet I feel extremely comfortable bringing my babies to & recommending everybody else to aswell.

Hello, and good morning. I called the office this morning at 7:19AM and I was going to leave a message to reorder my dogs prescription because he is out of his medication. I was glad to hear someone answer the phone on the other end. However, my happiness came to an abrupt stop when the Hispanic lady on the phone I presume started having a massive attitude with me. First off, she didn’t even ask questions when I said I needed to order my dogs medication. I had to tell her my pets name and I also gave her my name and she goes “WHATS THE PHONE NUMBER???” So I proceed to tell her and then she asked me something else but I couldn’t hear what she said as she was mumbling her words. I thought she asked for the name of the medication so I told her and she snapped and actually yelled over the phone. I said “Excuse you??” Not sure who this lady thinks she is but definitely not enough to disrespect me. Anyway, it’s clear she woke up on the wrong side of the bed or maybe she’s just always like this in general. Sad, I know. It’s also sad that these people have to help us with the health of our dogs. I will be switching vet hospitals because of this. Rule #1 do not disrespect the customer.

Compassionate care, because they really love animals! The staff is wonderful. Dr. Porte goes above and beyond. No pressure or sales speaches. Absolutely my favorite vet in San Diego County. It's time to say bye to the corporate vet offices that want to charge you just to walk in. I've been here for wellness checks, illness treatments, & sadly a euthanasia. No matter the reason why I'm there, everyone on the staff has been wonderful, kind, & supportive.
