How to Save Money at Animal Hospital of Irvine

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

We trusted them to help us with our Labrador 10 years ago. We were very happy with their services but moved out of state. Ten years later we find them to be the same great organization (kudos Dr Lai). Services (scheduling, billing and care) were professional and well explained. We are now back with our Lab and her daughter. Trust goes a long way and we are ecstatic to renew our relationship.

EDIT: I’m actually updating my review as I’ve recently experienced a veterinary emergency with my dog and this practice has been THE BEST. My dog was extremely sick on Saturday and after chatting with a local 24-hour vet that said it could wait til morning, I called Animal Hospital of Irvine Sunday morning. They worked my dog into their schedule and have been heavensent ever since. They were transparent about costs, gave multiple options and recommendations based on cost structures, and have gone above and beyond to answer multiple questions, spread over many days. They call right away any time there have been test results and everyone has been so patient and gentle in handling my sick little girl. Seeing my little pup sick and hurting has been awful, but the entire team here from the front desk to the techs to the doctors have all been so kind, so supportive, so gracious, and so wonderful. I’m scared, but I know she is in SUCH great hands and will have the best outcome as a result of this team’s hard work and care. I want to shout my gratitude to them from the rooftops. Go here, you won’t be disappointed!! Such a truly incredible practice. Everyone on the phone has been extremely patient and kind, even when I’ve called on a busy weekend afternoon. I’ve had disorganized records and despite my own lack of preparedness, the team has always been so courteous and kind on the phone. That is only minor foreshadowing to their great levels of empathy and care while in the office. All of the vet techs and assistants have been so loving and gentle towards my dog — they’ve recognized she’s a little people shy and each of them have gone out of their way to make her feel comfortable with them, even carrying her in their arms like a baby! The incredible intelligent and honest vet even got on her hands and knees on the floor with my pup to make her feel more comfortable during her physical exam. I took her in recently for some simple services like nail clipping and when I brought her up to the door, she was running to get inside — something she’s never done before at any of the other vets we have visited. It might be just a touch more expensive than other practices we have visited but my god, every single person here has made it so well worth it. I feel so fortunate to have found them and recommend them to absolutely anyone looking for a knowledgeable, loving, and compassionate practice.

Leo my 5 year old red point siamese, had pulled a nail. I called this vet for the very first time. Appointment given asap was seen by Dr Joanne. What a wonderful facility. Excellent healthcare, caring people, and extremely Empathic. Wonderful and thoughtful reception, Allyson, and the complete staff. Leo adored them. I will be back as a forever client. Thank you guys. Leo doing well 😃😃😃😃😃😃😃😃😃😃 Second visit: my feeling toward the staff and doctors is still the same and Leo was very calm. Great Veterinarians.
