How to Save Money at Centinela Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Dr. Palmquist is the vet you will wish you had from the start of your pets life. He is so heart centered, real and incredible. I searched high and low for him. Since being with him our cat Ray has lost 3 pounds in 2 months and is shrinking his tumors.

Dr. Palmquist is a gift to animals. I wish all vets would approach care like he does. There is no upselling, overmedicating, or churn and burn feeling. He spends quality time with us to understand his recommendations and time with the dogs to make them safe and calm. We couldn't ask for a better vet for our two dogs, Isla and Rio. He receives our highest recommendation!

THE BEST ANIMAL HOSPITAL in our dog's 14.5 years. I just wish we found this amazing hospital earlier in our journey - it would have saved us so much grief over the years of finding the right hospital. Our sweet boy Auggie, went to many vets over the years. We would find someone we liked and then they would leave the hospital and the care would go downhill. Then we would start the search again. Auggie had emotional trauma from our last vet hospital's negative treatment and I was so worried about starting over at a new place, but my fears went away instantly. The minute I met the staff and Dr Orme, I knew we had found our home. Not only do they practice incredible vet medicine, they truly care about their patients. My uncle is an incredible vet in S. Fl and I was raised at his hospital - Centinela has the same care and quality. It felt like home. Although Auggie had a short time as a patient, as his life was coming to an end, I know that he felt safe and loved at Centinela. Thank you Dr. Orme, Dr. Palmquist, and staff for going above and beyond for our Auggie Boy...even down to the last minutes of his life. We are forever grateful to you all. We are so appreciative of your compassion and professionalism. When we are ready to bring a new dog into our life, we know that your hospital will be the only one we will bring them to.

If I had to sum up the veterinarian in one word, I would ask for more words. I call him humble, knowledgeable, personable, innovative, and caring. Dr. Palmquist takes his time with every patient (don't expect ANY vet's office to be on time) and educates the human that comes with their pet. He takes the time needed to diagram disease processes and the organs that are affected. He is keenly aware of a person's concern and even finances without them being revealed. He took off some $ off my friend's dog's bill because she was going to need treatment twice a week for a few weeks. Nobody else does that in LA! Eventhough they can afford higher priced vets, even celebrity pets come to Centinela. I met a famous Instagram pet in thr parking lot. Though folks might not think Inglewood is safe, Centinela's location is perfectly safe and around the corner from one of the priciest neighborhoods. When you arrive, park your care in the parking lot right next to the clinic. Go in front of the office and they will come out to register you. Dr. Palmquist himself will come find you at your car.

I've been taking my special beloveds to CAH for over a decade. I love the amazing, caring, knowledgeable humans there. They do as much holistically as possible, and conventionally, when needed. This is a small hospital with wonderful people. I've read reviews of people upset that they didn't get fast service or some other issue. Look, the world is still dealing with small staff and supply shortages due to the shutdowns, let's be real. Life is not the same. And yet this crew gets in there and does amazing work with love. Dr Palmquist and staff could not have been more kind or lovely when it was time to let our Ozzie pass. And they continue to be amazing with out sweet Lily and her many health challenges. Dr Palmquist, Dr Orme, Dr Johnson, and the staff are fabulous humans who take beautiful care of my cat. We love and appreciate them.
