How to Save Money at Samaritan Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Update to original post from last week. We had a not so good experience the first time, as you will find out if you read my first lengthy review below. Anyway we had rescheduled our appointment with Samaritan from Thursday to Monday of the following week, due to them being " too busy". Unfortunately for them we had to take our cat elsewhere because his condition needed immediate care. I promised I'd do a second review on our next visit which obviously didn't happen. Nevertheless we will consider coming back here in the future as I had stated before that I believe in second chances. Called in the same day to see if they had appointments available. They said that someone had cancelled their appointment so they had an opening for 1:30 pm. So we show up at around 1:20 pm. Upon entrance one of the nurses asked us with a snotty attitude if we had signed in. So we signed in and waited for about 15 minutes. Then I decided we should ask someone if there was something else they needed from us since it was our first visit. They said that there was paperwork which needed to be filled out, which they should've told us when they had us sign in. After filling out the paperwork we sat and waited about another 10 minutes or so. Then a nurse came and asked us if we could come back at 3 pm because the doctor was doing a surgery. We said that we couldn't because we had other appointments to go to. They then made us wait about another 5 minutes, at which time another nurse came up to us to inform us that they weren't sure when the doctor could see our cat because they were extremely busy. She added that we could leave our cat and come back to pick him up at 5. But we couldn't do that because of our other obligations. At the end of the day I told them that it was wrong for them to have given us that appointment slot to begin with if they were so busy. They should've just given us an appointment for another day or just let us go somewhere else. God knows there's an abundance of animal hospitals in the high desert area. I also didn't like that when I was telling them this they weren't apologetic, they just kept defending themselves and one of them just said to me, " I'm sorry you feel that way." which to me is like saying, go F__K yourself. We did reschedule the appointment for Monday, so we'll see how they handle this one. If they do well I will be giving them a great post because I believe in second chances. But if they do not, I'll be sure to accent the bad review I'm already giving them, because it is what's called for.

I should have written this a long time ago, but I want to now. We've taken a sweet dog and cat to Dr. Choi, who was just wonderful with both of them. The staff is also just so kind. We no longer have our sweet Eva, an AMStaff; she crossed over the rainbow bridge about a month ago. But when we brought her in a few years back, everyone was so kind and treated her with such care. Dr. Choi did preform surgery on her to remove a large tumor and even removed smaller ones for no charge. Unfortunately, they returned a couple years later with a vengeance, so we decided to have her put to sleep. But when I get puppies in time, I know I'll take them here again. Oh, he also saved our cat, Licorice, who had a growth and got sick with infection. He's doing well, just getting old, but he's happy and feisty! Thank you Dr. Choi and staff, you're the best!

First time at Samaritans Animal Visit. It was very busy, but things ran smoothly, and the office staff were all kind and professional. After taking x-rays and an ultrasound of our beloved pet, the doctor gave us the news. The Doctor was kind, while taking us to a room where we saw the results. He took his time, showed empathy, and explained all the details if the tests. We highly recommend the Veterinarian Doctor and the Hospital.

I recently had the privilege of bringing my beloved dog to Samaritan for treatment of kidney issues, and I cannot speak highly enough of the exceptional care they provided. Dr Choi really went above and beyond to address the issues my boy was having. I wholeheartedly recommend Samaritan Animal Hospital to any pet owner in need of exceptional veterinary care. With gratitude, Tyler and Kato

Samaritan came highly recommended to us. Our first experience was a sad and amazing one for our family as we had to put our doggie down. The staff was exceptional! Very caring, very clear on communicating and very patient with us. They allowed our children in to say goodbye and be with Max has a passed. 4 months later we brought in our new puppy that we rescued from a shelter. He was very sick. They were again, patient clear and accomodating as we didn't know what was wrong with our new puppy. Within the month Winston was a Healthy little dude and we are So very happy and thankful to Samaritan and it's staff! Thank you, Thank you!
