How to Save Money at Hayward Veterinary Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Such a great place to take your pet for care. Friendly, knowledgeable staff. Clean and well organized. Our cat loved it. Update. We brought our cat in, Candice was so warm and comforting with "Argus". She made him feel like he wasn't at all at a veterinary hospital. They took such great care of him! We are sold for life, we'll never go to any other vet!!

Dr. Harper and his team of incredibly talented staff provided my cat, Book and I, with excellent care. Furthermore everyone at the hospital provided something for Book each in their own way. Dr. Harper is intelligent, kind, creative, with a warm, helping personality. His team is no different as they exude the friendliness and concern we needed since Book is in his senior years at stage 2 of 4 renal failure at 15 years old. This can seem to be grim news, but that was not my experience. Everyone gave me the assurance that my buddy has more time to still enjoy a fulfilling life in spite of his body simply getting old and tired. Being able to walk away with confidence that, though little can be done, doesn't mean that it's awful or tragic. Book is reaching the end of his life, so Dr. Harper helped me with understanding his condition and needs. I was impressed with his ability to educate me about what's happening and it wasn't at all sad, pedantic, or complicated. He bridges the gap of being a talented doctor/scientist who can convey in simpler terms what I needed to hear and know. The vet techs were all equally as helpful and knowledgeable in their own way. The care we received was simply special and I walked away with the assurance that I could be present, active, and understanding of Book's needs moving forward and give him a good finale to hiz difficult life. I adopted him when he was 7 years old and had been turned over by his original owners due to animal behavior, along with being returned two more times by others who had adopted him. Needless to say, Book is special to me and I wanna make sure what he gets improves upon his past experience. You will receive such blessings by entrusting your pet's care to Hayward Animal Hospital. And if you're in the difficult place of last moments with your furry loves, they consider it a privilege to be able to help you in saying goodbye with peace and warm-hearted care. This is almost verbatim of what I heard a vet tech say to me when I inquired about how they "survive" being present in those moments. This is what you and your pets deserve and want. Full speed ahead and rock-on Hayward Animal Hospital... We salute you!

The whole staff is amazing. You get to stay with your dog while they exam, draw blood and give shots. We left a big hairy mess behind and they are kind about it. Our dog was sick and we needed help quick. They were attentive, patient and helpful. Helped us stay within our budget and advised us as though Remi was one of their own! We were very put off by our last vet (the Castro valley animal hospital) and I combed reviews and loved what I heard about HVH and it’s all true. Thank you HVH
