How to Save Money at Papaya Veterinary Emergency - Encinitas
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I can't express enough gratitude to the incredible team at Papaya Vet for saving my dog's life. My dog recently needed emergency surgery after swallowing a toy, and the squeaker got lodged in his intestines. It was a terrifying experience, but the veterinarians and staff at Papaya Vet were exceptional from start to finish. Dr. Bui did the surgery and I can’t express enough how amazing she is!!!! The staff was soooo amazing! They let me be with my sweet boy while he was recovering and they explained everything they were doing. They answered all my questions (which was a LOT! And they never acted annoyed with me like most vets do if you ask lots of questions) I will forever go here now instead of our general vet. Even though papaya is typically an emergency clinic- their care is so much better than any vet I’ve been too. The cost is worth it. I truly believe God led us here! And my baby is home!!! ❤️❤️❤️

Papaya was a lifesaver! My Great Dane ate a sago palm seed, and I knew I needed to get her to the vet ASAP. I called my vet (Santa Fe Animal Clinic) on the way, and they referred us to Papaya, conveniently right down the street! From the moment we arrived, I felt a sense of calm. I’d been to a different ER vet with a friend’s dog before, and it was so chaotic it made me stressed. Thankfully, that was not the case at Papaya! The team took great care of my dog and was very accommodating to her large size. She dislikes being confined in exam rooms, so they performed everything needed to induce vomiting right in the waiting area. Since no one else was there, this worked out perfectly! Dr. Boisse was excellent—she explained every step and reviewed the costs before administering any treatment. Our vet tech, Stephanie, was amazing as well. She stayed with us through the entire process and was so patient and gentle with my dog. I’m grateful to her for helping ensure my dog got the full dose of medicine, no small feat for a large breed. It took quite a while for her to drink it all, but Stephanie was in no rush, taking it slow to keep my dog calm. They even gave us extra pee pads for the car ride home in case of nausea, which was such a thoughtful touch. They also provided a cleaner for my nails since the medicine to counteract the toxin was jet black—little extra steps that truly made a difference! Thank you all!

A kind group of Veterinarians took care of my Cat George after he had been in a fight and had half a swollen face. They were able to calm him and me as well. The took him and shaved his little face, cleaned the wound, antibiotics were administered and off we went. The cat has healed and all is well.... I recommend them.

Our little dog had obviously damaged his eye somehow and was squinting and tearing. It was a Saturday, and we couldn't get him into see our regular vet. Knowing that a scratched eye can become infected and deteriorate quickly, we brought him to Papaya right away. As it happened, there were no emergencies or other patients, so we were seen very quickly by a lovely young vet and a fantastic vet tech. The vet put a stain in his eye, which enabled her could see the little scratch with a black light. She then prescribed the necessary medicines, and gave us clear directions. Everyone there was kind and took excellent care of our little guy. His eye is almost completely healed. I hope that we never have need of an emergency vet, but if we do, I will definitely go back to Papaya.

If you need an Emergency Vet group that really cares about what they do, look no further! Kind, Caring, compassionate group! We had a failed prior Vet experience for the same issue, and we were so blessed to find this vet group! Amazing staff, all the way around! From calling and talking to Cassandra to let her know we were coming, being greeted by Carlos and meeting with Dr Bui to discuss our Cat and options! Hands down they want to help and are reasonably priced for the area! Our cat needed an emergency procedure or he would have died. Dr Bui provided all the options with no pressure, no judgement, just kind and loving support for not only our cat, but our entire family! Dr Bui did a life saving procedure on my cat and Dr Brooks did the anesthesia what a dream team! They took great care of our cat and family! I am sure there are other staff members that we never met that we are also, so grateful for! The follow up calls daily after surgery the 1st few days was above and beyond! The prior Vet office didn’t even call to check to see how our cat was doing after he had a procedure done with them! Forever Grateful to Papaya for saving our Thomas O’Malley!!!!!!!!! ❤️
