How to Save Money at Urgent Pet

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Our experience with the Urgent Pet Animal Hospital was amazing! We had a sick puppy in the morning so we called and had an appointment 4 hours later. I got to the pet hospital early and they saw us immediately. They reviewed the services and medical plan they outlined for us. Once we signed off and paid a deposit I left while they did tests, blood work and X-rays - then our puppy was ready to be picked up in under 2 hours. When they finished with all the tests for the puppy the veterinarian called and went over everything they found - she was so comprehensive and answered any questions I had, I never felt rushed. I would recommend them to anyone - I hope we don't need to go back but if we have another emergency I know 'Jasmine' will be well taken care of.

Dr. K helped us diagnose our puppy's allergies quickly and effectively. In full disclosure, she is a family friend. Our new labradoodle puppy was getting multiple ear infections and was constantly scratching all of her body. Our official vet (not Dr. K) diagnosed her with allergies, but said it was impossible to tell what she was allergic to - could be food, dust, pollen or other culprits. She recommended eliminating chicken from her diet as a first step. This did not help much, so she then prescribed chicken-free kibble and told us to not give her any other food for 3 months, which was very difficult. However, when I reached out to our friend Dr. K, she recommended a much easier way to diagnose allergies and ordered a blood test. This gave us answers within a couple of weeks (instead of multiple months of food restriction with trial and error). We eliminated the foods that she was allergic to (turns out she was not allergic to chicken), and she has been so much better. No more ear infections and constant scratching! Dr. K also helped us a lot when our puppy had an emergency. It's obvious how much she cares about her patients, who are lucky to have her. Highly recommend Dr. K and her staff.

Very happy with my experience here. Had a cat having digestive issues (we thought it was UTI). Was able to get in within an hour of calling. Staff was super friendly and supportive. Our cat saw Dr. K and she took ample time to walk us through all of the possible situations and treatments. Really appreciated all of the details and left feeling well informed. Kitty received great treatment and was back to her normal self within a few days. Would go back here without a doubt if there are ever any other urgent issues regarding my pets.

We used this vet twice and both times the staff and the Drs were friendly, caring and thorough. Most importantly, we got an appointment the day we called and were seen in a timely fashion. Thanks Urgent Pet for offering amazing care in our little town.

I received a surgery referral from VCA-Oakland for my little guinea pig. Dr. Luehman was wonderful, listened to my concerns, and took extra care of my piggie. Unfortunately, she passed away (due to complications from the surgery- a risk Dr. L well-explained to me and is common for piggies 😢). Dr. L provided me with updates and sent over some pictures and videos they had taken while they cared for my girl. It was comforting to know that her last day was spent in such compassionate care.
