How to Save Money at Pet Specialists of Monterey, Greg Marsolais DVM, MS, DACVS
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

If I could give this establishment 0 stars I would. I am very disappointed in their "compassionate" work towards pets. If you have a pet that needs an emergency, please go elsewhere. I took my 3 year old cocker spaniel to this establishment about 3 weeks ago. All she had was a stomach ache from food that was backed up. Which was what they told me was happening to her. Instead of giving her something to loosen her bowel movements, they gave her an injection for the pain. They charged me $800 just to tell me that, and left me going home without anything else for her. They even wanted to keep her in for observation at a t 3k cost... for being backed up???? (Shady) The next morning, she was paralyzed from the waist down! I called to let them know of the situation but they rudely told me that it was a new symptom she was experiencing and that they would have to see her again for an additional cost. My poor girl was in pain, and did not make it. She passed away a couple of days after this incident. We went to another vet where they told us that the injection given to her might have caused a severe reaction to her. DO NOT come here under any circumstances!

Even after a year has gone by I still get angry at the "care" we recieved. After tortureing my cat with a 4 day hospital stay, saying he would improve with iv antibiotics, they finally agreed with us that it was a stomach abstruction. After draining 8 thousand they demanded another 10 thousand to operate. We hit our limit and was forced to put him down, even after begging them to lower the price they refused to claim any responsability and said putting down a 10 year old cat wasnt all that bad.

I took my dog there after he had choked on his collar and was bleeding from us mouth. I call and asked if they would be able to take him in due to it being an emergency. They said yes. I got there at 10am and didn’t leave their until there until 7pm. Multiple dogs with FAR less sever circumstances got check before we did. They completely forgot about us even though we ask multiple times when we would be seen. Once they finally took my dog they said they got him mixed up with another dog! I’m again having a doctor tell you oh we have you mixed up with another person! DON’T WASTE YOUR TIME, OR MONEY! Worst care I’ve ever received.

We had to put our Maxi down after 14 years of faithful doggy service. The staff was extremely attentive and compassionate. The Dr. was super attentive, walking us through the entire time and comforting Max as well even after he was gone. I cannot say enough about how appreciative I am. Max was a 90 lb lab mix. He could no longer walk. They had nurses come to help him onto a gurney from the back of my car and told us exactly what would happen. The whole experience was heartbreaking but they treated us with dignity and compassion all the way through. I can't thank them enough for helping us through this. I highly recommend to anyone.

First I smelled skunk outside tonight. Then my neighbor came by frantic with her dog in the car. The dog was having seizures and foaming at the mouth. She said that she was going to drive to Marina. We're in Moss Landing. I told her that I would google a 24hr vet. Pet Specialists were the closest to us. I sent her a pin for direction and called and talked to Stephanie, letting her know that my neighbor was on the way. After her visit, my neighbor called and said that the dog had been sprayed in the mouth. They took her and pup outside, saline, washed mouth and gave her instructions and sent her home with out charge! She was so relieved and grateful. Thank you so much Pet Specialist!!!!!You're the best ever! I told my friend to go to walmart on the way home and get a kennel. Mine dog loves his kennel and feels safe in the car and bed at night. That it would be good especially after this incident to put him in the other room after bath, get some good rest. Again- Thank you Pet Specialist for being there at all hours in an emergency and for the excellent care and more!!!
